Get out and play

Full story: Topeka Capital-Journal

The moon won't quite be full on Saturday night, but at three-quarters full it should shine brightly when the clouds don't huddle together for a shower.

I've read all this with great interest. Those who criticize Mr. Greenwood didn't do so when he took his money, purchased an entire city block of dilapidated buildings and built the courtyard. He haa also had more than one opportunity to sell the property downtown (including to the bank you elude to) but most weren't the types of businesses you would want down there (large pawn shop, used car lot etc.). He has a large investment of his own and has the right to protect that investment. The bank going to the Lee Masonry property did so because of sheer economics (traffic count). They paid over three times the asking price of Mr. Greenwood's property for that land. Several people have invested money downtown recently such as E. A. & Darrel Gentry, Clarence Brewer, Sr., Hugh Sweatt & Johnny Clark, the people who own Ingrid's, etc. You've got to remember that Central City had a devastating fire a few years ago that took out a lot of it's downtown and it's hard to get businesses to locate in any downtown area. Greenville would have been in the same shape if they didn't have the new judicial building and courthouse. Central City has a festival every labor day weekend that brings in 30,000 people over three days. If those "empty" lots weren't there they would have to move that festival somewhere else. Let's work to improve downtown but don't criticize the ones who have offered more than "lip service" but have invested their money down there.

You can't blame Lawton/Greenwood if they didn't sell the property to another bank, it would be the same if Mark Pouge would sell the property across from his Chevrolet dealership to Don Moore.

I would like to see more check advance and lottery sales places in town. Mr. Greenwood ownes the Telemarketing building and the property beside it, that would make a ideal location.

I think more predatory lendors are a great idea, especially in a community as impoverished as mberg.

I also believe that the muhlenbergsucks website should come back under ryan glenn's supervision.

the real problem with the county is the lack of leadership at the board of education. there are some real clowns in charge.

when good folks that really care about the fine children of this county are in charge of education you will see a big difference is this county....

While it is essential the children get a good education, the adults also need to improve their education level. There is a nice new community college in CC that needs to be utilized by all - not just the younger generation. Only when the general population becomes better educated will they begin to learn how to bring about change. They'll begin to fully understand the underlying problems that are keeping the county and school system from progressing, and go about kicking some you know what out of the way to get it moving in the right direction. Education is the key - FOR ALL - not just the children.

We need to stop putting in more gas stations, liquor stores, and fast food chains. We have enough in a congested area of CC. We need to put in more nice eateries, with healthier food selections, more variety of stores that offer items the others do not, and more places involving family fun and activity---example, a new bowling alley. We also need to bring in a couple factories so that those who do not have college degrees can make decent money---and don't have to resort to fast food and menial retail jobs. I think we also clean up the smaller towns and make them look like we give a d**n about the county as a whole. Elect officials with new ideas, fix the roads, establish a better school system, etc. I could go on forever lol.
I couldn't agree more. I grew up in M.county but I would never go back. There's to many people doing drugs and I have kids to think about. I don't want them mixed up in all that. I do think you have some great ideas. I would love to see them happen for my hometown.

I agree with Bitsy education is important. I also agree that leadership is key too.
Drug dealers run wide open. The highways are little less than dumpsites.
I love this county, it is my home but what we have become is very sad

True, Bitsy true. The highways look terrible. You would think the local officials could organize a clean up Muhlenberg County day. Maybe enlist the Boy Scouts, or better yet, get some of those prisoners at the correctional center to pick up the trash.

That is true about clean up day, but it would have to be everyday here. You can't keep up with the litter bugs around here. Some people just don't care....really a nasty place, and I sure don't know the answer to it.

Just a little common sense taught at home would go a long way, dont litter, wow what an idea! Take some responsibility and volunteer, at what, anything positive! Drugs, come on, the biggest drug dealers are the dr.s! The rest are laying in under the rocks like the skum they are! If you see drug traffic, report it, hot spot card etc! Join a watch group, adopt a spot. My gosh there is so much we can do with little effort, stand up for something that is right, even if you know its not popular with the stereo typical muhlenberger. If your kid gets on drugs, you better think about what you could had did different, dont blame the area, please!

I sent hot spot cards in and the police never even came by. I stay at home and kept my blinds opened and the area was never checked. So what is up with that?

No one can blame the area, it's just land. It's the people that occupy the land that litters and throws trash out of their vehicle's in peoples yards and along the roads. That's the way people have grown up to do, it's not just the kids. I have and always will try to help the area anyway that I can, but it sure gets tuff when tou have very lttle help.

has anyone on this site heard of kentucky new gas?. this project WILL revive the county and the COAL industries. with the apparent lack of local interest in this project, most of the jobs will probably go to more interest outsiders. this is going to be right in your backyards and nobody ever talks about it on this forum and i get the local paper delivered and not much is said. this project is going to put 1200 people to work during 3 years of construction and 500 full time jobs when it opens. construction could break ground sometime in 2010. this project WILL turn the county around.

my 68 yr old sister turned in hot spot cards to the the sheriffs dept a month ago and no one never came by, drug dealers live next door to her, later on she contacted state police and they come by to check it out and made an arrest the next day at the drug house. she will not send in anymore hot spot cards to the sheriffs dept.

Commonman, Barney your posts are definitely honest and it is uplifting to know people are genuinly concerned about the county.. I think one thing people have to realize on here and don't, is whatever you post is going to be read by people all over the country. If a business is interested in knowing about a community, they are going to be reading all these blogs, websites, etc. that are online, typing in 42330, and getting their first glimpse of Muhlenberg County. What kind of impression are they going to get about Muhlenberg County reading gossip about individuals, silly comments about politicians (e.g. weight), people lamblasting others for their opinions instead of respectfully disagreeing, foul language, countless misspelled words, and so forth? It's like a window into Muhlenberg County culture. Keep that in mind everyone when you post. Do you want businesses to relocate here and help Muhlenberg County? Then you better start posting comments like people they are going to want to employ.
