'Popcorn Capital of the World' losing its historic industry
From the back seat of the 1965 Mercedes-Benz convertible, Charlie Evers smiled and waved, celebrating all things popcorn as grand marshal of this month's Marion Popcorn Festival parade. He also wrestled with the irony of a celebration - and city - linked to popcorn when ConAgra had announced just weeks before that it was eliminating all 170 of its popcorn jobs in Marion County.
Monroe bank shows improvement
Monroe Bank and Trust continues to show signs it has fully turned the corner from a recession-fueled rough patch, with BauerFinancial Inc. again upgrading its ranking of the bank. In its most recent report, Florida-based Bauer gave Monroe Bank and Trust a rating of 3½ stars, up from its previous ranking of three stars.

ConAgra to close two Marion County popcorn plants
ConAgra is closing a pair of Marion County popcorn plants. The plants employ 170 people, according to ConAgra, and produce Orville Redenbacher microwave popcorn.
