Could the mauling death of the Schweders have been prevented if Oglethorpe County had bothered to spend the money for an animal control agency and shelter? Prior to this tragedy, this lack only showed that the commissioners have no compassion for stray and sick animals in the county, but with this recent tragedy, Oglethorpe County’s poor judgement might very well have cost two residents their lives.
Oglethorpe County is one of about half in our state that chooses not to provide animal protection services for its residents. In addition, many of these counties have no humane society or even a veterinarian. It seems that elected officials always put the care of animals at the bottom of the list. Had Oglethorpe seen fit to spend money on spay and neuter, leash laws (and enforcing them), etc., this might be a different story. The problem of free-running and stray animals is caused by irresponsible human behavior -- people who allow non-spayed/neutered pets to roam and reproduce and people who abandon animals to fend for themselves. With no animal control agency to help prevent this, we now see what can happen. The Oglethorpe Board of Commissioners’ website doesn’t even have any animal-related ordinances listed, leading one to assume there ARE no ordinances concerning animals in the county, However, they do have a PDF document available for download --“What To Do When A Loved One Dies”. How ironic. Oglethorpe residents need to light a fire under the commissioners to add animal ordinances, an animal control agency and a shelter to prevent any future loss of life. Their negligence in protecting its citizens and its homeless animals cannot continue. |

This is just unfathomable to me that this county has been allowed to continue without provisions for the protection of both animals and humans. Animals need protection from abuse, abandonement and cruelty and humans need protection from errant animals.

well, do you all remember what it took to get a better EMS here? it took a death and a law suit. maby now they will be forced to get animal control. |

I heard that people are wanting to make it to where you have to have ur pets fixed so they cannot breed. I do not agree with that if you are responsible with your pets. I heard that from the CC

yea, couse you got to examin the body. |

Why didn't the dogs attack the man that found them? Why didn't the dogs attack any of the responding units? I call Bull Hockey on this! Sure the dogs may have fed on them after the fact, but no way they killed them. |
