Pair accused in theft of $3,000 watch

One is accused of stealing a high-end watch in a grab-and-go theft and the other is accused of trying to pawn it off just minutes later. The two suspects, William Crowell, 24, of 2277 Avondale Ave., and Andre Turner, 19, of 1121 Woodstock Ave., who are both charged with theft, were arraigned today in Toledo Municipal Court and ordered to remain in the Lucas County jail in lieu of $10,000 each.

Polygraphs can be useful, but not reliable

Ernest Sampson could not hold back his tears in Lucas County Common Pleas Court last week as Judge Frederick McDonald dismissed felony rape and gross sexual imposition charges against him. The Wood County man had passed two polygraph examinations regarding the two alleged child victims in the case and, after nearly seven months in the Lucas County jail, he was free to go home.

Authors! Authors! reveals speakers

The Blade and the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library Friday announced the three writers who will make up the second half of its 20th Authors! Authors! speakers series. Heading the list is Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Isabel Wilkerson , who will appear at the Main Library's McMaster Auditorium, 325 Michigan Street, at 7 p.m. on March 18. Wilkerson spent 15 years writing The Warmth of other Suns , for which she interviewed more than 1,200 people and unearthed archival sources to document the Great Migrations north and west in America during various decades of the 20th century.

Names of 15 on Toledo Blight Authority released

Several Toledo Councilmen today released the names of 15 people for the newly formed Toledo Blight Authority, which has been described as a mechanism by which leaders can come together, share ideas, and collaborate to help citizens sustain neighborhoods. Council approved creating the authority, which was spearheaded by Councilman Jack Ford following his campaign promise to do so last year.

Scott coach marrying ex-student

The Scott High School boys basketball coach, who was suspended last week after he was accused of an inappropriate relationship with a student, plans to marry an 18-year-old woman who graduated this year from the school. Christopher Richard Dames, 34, was issued a marriage license Monday from Lucas County Probate Court to wed Kierra Nakevia Gibbs, 18, according to court records.

Pair placed on community control

Referring to their crime as "a very pathetic attempt to be Bonnie and Clyde," Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Gene Zmuda sentenced a Maumee man and his girlfriend Wednesday for assaulting off-duty Toledo Police Officer Gregory Wallace. James Miller, 27, of 1113 Kirk St. was placed on community control for four years and ordered to spend six months in the Correctional Treatment Facility followed by four months in the county's Work Release Program.

Ex-bondsman, employee put on community service

A former bail bondsman and an employee each were placed on community control for three years Wednesday for posting a $50,000 bond from an unlicensed bonding company. Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Gene Zmuda also ordered Damon Hogan and Ericka Burns to each perform 200 hours of community service and have no involvement with bail-bond agencies during that time.

$50,000 bond set for suspect in fatal crash

Bond was set at $50,000 Wednesday for a Toledo woman who turned herself in on charges stemming from a fatal drunken driving crash. Heather K. Cooper, 39, of 502 Morrison Dr., entered not guilty pleas before Lucas County Common Pleas Michael Goulding to alternate counts of aggravated vehicular homicide.

'Berkey Bob' a former police chief, Sylvania Twp. fire official, iron man

Robert J. Jankowski, Sr., a union ironworker by trade who was a Sylvania Township assistant deputy fire chief and chief of police in Berkey, died Monday in Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital, Grand Rapids, Mich. He was 76. Mr. Jankowski, widely known as "Berkey Bob," was taken to the hospital after falling at his cottage in Manistee, Mich., his son Dave said.

Sex charges dropped against Luckey man

Sexual assault charges were dismissed Tuesday against a Wood County man after an assistant Lucas County prosecutor said he passed a polygraph examination Ernest Sampson, 56, of Luckey had been indicted in February on two counts of rape and three counts of gross sexual imposition for incidents that allegedly involved two girls under the age of 13. Jennifer Lambdin, an assistant Lucas County prosecutor, told the court last month that under an agreement with Mr. Sampson, she would ask the court to dismiss the charges if he passed a polygraph examination administered by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
