State approves coal ash disposal at Matlock Bend landfill, in Loudon

Full story: www.wate.com

The state has approved limited ash disposal test runs from the TVA ash spill site in Roane County to four Class I Tennessee landfills. The TDEC approval goes into effect July 15. Matlock Bend landfill in Loudon County is one of the approved sites. Loudon County Mayor Doyle Arp says he had no idea the operator of Matlock Bend Municipal Landfill had agreed to accept TVA fly ash on a trial basis. That's not what the Solid Waste Commission members wanted done and I'm sure it's not what our county commissioners would have wanted done.” The approval for test runs came as a shock to some landfill neighbors and county officials. Arp says he'll fight to keep the ash out of this county, and at least one neighbor of the Loudon landfill feels the same way. Local resident Mark Moore says: I know they have to put it somewhere, but I'm not crazy about it being next door to me." Loudon resident Wendy Baustian, in a letter to county officials and state legislators, wrote: We have no idea of the lasting impact that the fly ash will impose upon the residents in terms of health....TVA tells people not to drink or play in the water near the spill because of the fly ash and it's unknown health hazards, yet we are going to bring it here. There is no amount of money that is acceptable to take, in exchange for the health and well-being of the members of this community.”

Dave....thanks so much for carrying this story. I believe we will need to get the community together on this and fight to keep this coal fly ash out of our landfill. Perhaps a community meeting in the near future would be the best way to get started. We can share data and develop a plan to work with our elected officials...lest we forget, it is an election year.

Thoughts?

Wendy,
I just got an e-mail from Mayor Arp stating that he agreed with you and your letter. I believe you got that e-mail too.

If he's willing to provide the leadership on this, he's in a good position to do it. Let him do so, regardless of whatever disagreements anyone has had with him in the past.

Those are my thoughts.

I'm not suprised that Loudon county is accepting fly ash, they have turned their back to the horrible polluting companies for years. Now they are leaving the citizens open to a new source of chemicals that have the possiblity to kill them with new chemicals. Now you know why Loudon is considered, cancer county.

Have you seen anywhere that Loudon County (either its government or its residents) are "accepting" this ash?
Have you read anywhere that the state has even given them a choice?

If so, please show me.

Dave, the News Sentinel article from Sat announcing the solid waste meeting, states, "According to Fields, Santec, the company that operates the landfill for the county, did not inform the commission in advance that there was a possibility of accepting the coal fly ash from TVA. The landfill already accepts fly ash from different sources, including the Kimberly Clark plant in Loudon, he said."

Yes, that might be the fly ash Nancy was referring to - the ash from the local K.C. plant. She didn't say but that could be.

I think there's a good chance this is going to be stopped. The same article you referred to indicates that Rep. Ferguson and Sen. McNally are involved now. No state agency, TDEC included, ignores those people. Turn out for the meeting if possible.

I have heard from someone on the inside that will probably NOT receive this fly ash, as it is currently being sent to Alabama, but the same person has removed themselves from the clean-up effort because, "TVA doesn't seem to be learning their lesson". Scary, huh?!!!

Hopefully, there will be a good turn out tomorrow night and together, we will stand and fight this.

I would encourage EVERYONE concerned to write to McNally, Ferguson and Matlock.(See thehunterreport.com for a list of elected officials and their email address).
