My boys have been wanting a dog for a long time now and we were finally prepared to adopt one. I found one online that was perfect at the shelter. I also called and emailed them to let them know we would be coming for him. The boys fell in love with him and of course so did I. Half way through the paperwork I gave my ID for verfication. They then proceeded to tell me that we could not adopt him because my address was not correct. I simply explained I recently got married and had to change my ssn first, but would be changing that this week. I even offered to bring in utility bills, to verify where we lived...even pay in full until I provided my new licese...They refused everything and denied our adoption. I have to say it was very disheartening to know that we were there to give this dog a loving home and were turned away. This is really something that should be told to families that come in and it was heartbreaking for the boys and well as myself. The dog was adopted later that day by another family as well.

Hon, legally the animal shelter can't adopt out any animal without current address. Your utility bills or anything like that wouldn't have worked because they need a state-issued ID.
They couldn't have registered the dog to the Kenton County Animal Registry Database without the ID either, which means [once again] legally, they can't adopt him to you. Don't let this dishearten you from adopting a dog, but you do need to remember the rules that they have to abide to. Get everything updated and try again. Most shelters *do* have this written on the adoption application, but its a footnote and is often disregarded or overlooked. |

Thank you for your response. I understand and was just very frustrated that I did not know this from the beginning, so I could have spared the boys the heartache. Also, the animal shelter near us does not have this policy, or at least they don't enforce it, so I thought they all used the same process. We are still looking though and will hopefully adopt one in the near future.
Thanks Again. |

One of the best shelters in this area is the Boone County Animal Shelter. We've rescued every one of our dogs from there and they've always been more than courteous and helpful.
Check http://www.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi... just a few of the adoptable dogs in your area. Good luck! |
