They can increase the tolls based on current need or the bond holders are going to require them to increase the tolls to pay off the bonds. Either way the tolls are going to go up. They haven't increased since 1981. What the public doesn't realize is that the parkways does not get revenue from WVDOT. Their main source of revenue is the tolls. There has been talk of the WVDOT taking over the Parkway Authority for years and if that happened then the tolls would have to come down. The exchange is that instead of travelers paying to use the road (along with instate commuters), the state would be forced to increase the gas sales tax to generate the revenue for WVDOT. So you have to ask yourselves, do you want to pay more instate taxes to have the WVDOT take the turnpike into its system or would you rather the tolls continue on the turnpike, subsidized mainly by commercial and out of state traffic?
