Another leg of Southern Virginia's Wild Blueway opened

Eleven paddlers readied for their four-hour trip on the Banister River Saturday morning from the Kings Bridge landing to Terry's Bridge. The Banister River in Halifax County is part of the Upper Reach blueway that traverses the Roanoke River basin.

Former supervisor Earl Womack indicted for embezzlement

Halifax County School Board trustees will get their first report on local and statewide SOL test scores when they meet this evening at 7:30 p.m. for their monthly public session Activity at the Banister River Gateway Project has picked up during the past two weeks in Halifax as drier weather conditions have followed the unusually wet weeks of July and A grand jury has issued seven indictments against former Halifax County supervisor and school transportation chief Earl Womack for felony embezzlement. Duke: build a track, aim to build trust

Activity at the Banister River Gateway Project has picked up during the past two weeks in Halifax as drier weather conditions have followed the unusually wet weeks of July and Duke Energy employees visited South Boston Friday on a mission to forge closer ties to the community and make amends for the coal ash spill on the Dan River - a task that involved lots of manual labor on a muggy late summer day. The goal: Build a walking track at the Washington-Coleman Community Center.

Halifax County trustees get look at SOL results

Halifax County School Board trustees will get their first report on local and statewide SOL test scores when they meet this evening at 7:30 p.m. for their monthly public session in the second floor meeting room of the Mary Bethune Complex. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Merle Herndon and testing coordinator Nancy Zirkle, will review the scores which were released in late August showing improvement in some areas, but a drop in scores in other areas from last year.

Bowman renews call for unified finance office

Halifax County Board of Supervisors Finance Chairman Doug Bowman renewed his call Tuesday night for a single county finance office to take on the duties now carried out by four different offices. "I feel it is incumbent upon us to look at ways to cut costs," Bowman told fellow supervisors at their monthly meeting Tuesday night in Halifax.

Sale of land near airport approved

Halifax County supervisors on Tuesday night approved the sale of an easement across the rear of the William M. Tuck Airport. The board agreed to an option on the property to Williams Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Company for $687.50.

South Boston Police seek suspect

South Boston Police are looking for the person who assaulted and robbed a citizen on Cherry Street early Monday, Aug. 25. Officers were called at 4:42 a.m. to the scene where the victim told them he was walking to McDonald's when he was assaulted by a black male who was wearing a black hoodie.
