NC: 2,757 Labor Day drunken driving arrests

State officials say nearly 2,800 people were arrested for drunken driving during North Carolina's "Booze It & Lose It" Labor Day campaign. Of the 2,757 arrests for driving while impaired, Wake County had the most with 316, followed by Guilford County with 192 and Mecklenburg County with 150.

Yadkin County waterline receives funding

The Yadkin County Board of Commissioners Chairman Kevin Austin received a letter from North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory with the good news that the application for funding submitted by Yadkin County to the North Carolina Appalachian Regional Commission received his recommendation. An amount of $300,000 will be reserved for the Yadkin County Water System Improvements Project, which plans to extend a waterline to serve the town of East Bend with potable water from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County water system.

Hagan, Aiken to speak at state AFL-CIO convention

Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan and congressional candidate Clay Aiken are among the scheduled speakers at the annual convention of the state AFL-CIO in Raleigh. Almost 200 delegates are expected to attend the convention, which will be held Thursday and Friday.

Search widens for missing Appalachian State coed

Volunteers from Forsyth County are joining in the search for an Appalachian State University student who has been missing for a week. The Charlotte Observer reports volunteers from Kernersville were preparing on Wednesday to walk along the Mountains to Sea Trail, a 900-mile route of footpaths beginning in the Blue Ridge Mountains, to look for Anna Marie Smith.

Fitch Rates Winston Salem, NC's Series 2014B&C LOBs 'AA+'; Outlook Stable

The bonds are expected to sell through negotiation on September 17. The proceeds will be used to finance renovations for a transportation center, improvements to the convention center, refinance three debt issuances, and for business 40 corridor improvements. The 2014B and 2014C LOBs, which are on parity with the city's series 2006B LOBS, are secured by lease payments, subject to annual appropriation, and a deed of trust against a mix of essential and nonessential assets, namely the city's municipal building and the convention center.
