The economic pain afflicting public schools up and down California won't be felt in classrooms in Calaveras Unified School District.

Robert Friend, 58, of Valley Springs pleaded not guilty Thursday to a charge of attempted murder in the Saturday shooting of a man who shared his Valley Springs home.

A Valley Springs man remained in critical condition Monday after having been shot in the abdomen over the weekend during what the Calaveras County Sheriff's Department described as a dispute with his roommate.
