Dozen candidates on ballot in Miramar as suspended commissioner's seat up for grabs
“Nobody seems to know there's an election going on”
The last time this city held a special election in 2005, a mere 45 votes determined the winner. So when polls open here on Tuesday, a dozen candidates know that every ballot can make a difference in their bid to replace suspended Commissioner Fitzroy Salesman, whose term expires in a year.
'With 12 candidates, the actual winner is going to win by a very, very small amount of votes,' said Elections Office spokeswoman Mary Cooney.
It's the second time in less than three years that voters are heading to the polls to choose a replacement for Salesman. In December, Gov. Charlie Crist suspended Salesman , who is accused of pulling a gun on a fellow shopper at a Winn-Dixie supermarket the night before Thanksgiving. Read more

Suspended Miramar commissioner pleads not guilty to gun charge
“No one knows how I felt that day when I was threatened.”
Suspended Miramar Commissioner Fitzroy Salesman said Friday he hopes a jury will acquit him and people will eventually forgive him once they learn why he pulled a handgun on a fellow supermarket shopper on Thanksgiving Eve.
'I was fearful for my life,' Salesman, 51, told Broward Circuit Judge Martin Bidwill during an arraignment where he pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault with a firearm.
Outside the courtroom, Salesman said shopper Lazavius Hudson, 18, used a racial slur and threatened to beat him up during a confrontation at Winn-Dixie, 3108 S. University Drive. Read more
