Tembec Inc. plans indefinite shutdown of operations in Mattawa, Ont.

- Forestry firm Tembec Inc. (TSX:TMB) will be indefinitely shutting down operations at a plant in northern Ontario.

Company officials say the plant in Mattawa, east of North Bay, will shut down at the end of June for a minimum of 10 weeks, affecting 52 employees. Spokesman Richard Fahey says they'll re-evaluate the situation in August for a potential restart in the fall.

Last week, Tembec reported a second-quarter loss of $59 million.

Tembec said at the time that higher prices for fossil fuel are increasing the cost of transportation, chemicals and direct energy purchases. Read more

Tembec to idle Senneterre sawmill due to lack of wood supply; affect 260 workers

“The Natural Resources and Wildlife Department's actions will result in extensive downtime at the Senneterre facility”

- Tembec (TSX:TMB) announced Thursday that 260 workers will be affected by its decision to temporarily idle its Senneterre sawmill for at least three months this summer, due to lack of wood supply in the northwestern Quebec region.

"The announced shutdown is a clear consequence of the volume reduction brought about by the latest chief forester's evaluation of the allowable cut in the Paix des Braves territory," Michel Bastien, Quebec vice-president of Tembec's Forest Products Group, said in a news release. Read more

Tembec reports fire at Manitoba plant, says full production will resume shortly

- A fire at Tembec Inc.'s (TSX:TMB) Pine Falls plant in Manitoba resulted in no major injuries and will only impact production for a few days, the paper producer said Thursday.

The Montreal-based company said the fire at the plant's paper machine No. 1 broke out Wednesday night around 6:20 p.m.

Employees responded based on the company's procedure, which led to limited damage to machine No. 1, while the plant's paper machine No. 2 was unaffected.

The mill is expected to resume full production in a few days, Tembec said, adding it will take all necessary measures to ensure its customers continue to get their regular supply from the mill. Read more
