In 2001 the market price for Palladium was over $1,000. Stillwater was engaged in a similar if not the same contract with GM so Stillwater was in fact subsidizing GM. Stillwater didn't back out of any contracts then, why should GM do it now.

All the articles state that Russian interest in Stillwater Mine is 51%. I read back then that the Russian purchase was to enable them to sell their Russian mined previously stockpiled metal supply on the market. I wonder how our government has all the time in the world to get any of the stimulus back, but can't wait on GM long enough to allow them to pay higher prices and buy American. The Stillwater miiners certainly had their taxes included in the govenment programs to save that which is too big to fail. Only 1400 miners losing their jobs is small change?

I have not been a supporter of the bailouts or the stimulus programs. That is water under the bridge. Now that congress has done that it seems a shame that they would continue to support the killing of USA jobs.
Henry Ford was correct that he needed to build cars that his workers could buy. He paid his people well at the time so they could do that. He didn’t try to just make cheap cars, he knew that someone needed to purchase them. Maybe that is why they are still in business! Stillwater Mining pays good wages, is safe and environmentally solid. The overseas production doesn’t care much about any of the listed items. Maybe this is why they can produce PGMs cheaper..... South Africa, which has the world's deepest mines, has one of the highest rates of work-related mining deaths in the industrialized world. Last year 168 workers died in legal operations, down 24 percent from the previous year. Solidarity union said earlier on Tuesday so far 104 miners had lost their lives in mining accidents in South Africa this year. "The current level of mining deaths in South African means that more than three mineworkers die in mining accidents each week ... these figures are shocking," said Solidarity Deputy General Secretary Dirk Hermann.(Reporting by Agnieszka Flak and Gordon Bell) Support Stillwater Miners who support the USA! |
