EMC examines VMware stake sale after activist push

After months of pressure from Elliot Management Corp., data storage equipment maker EMC Corp. may sell its 80 percent stake in VMware Inc. Paul Singer-run activist hedge fund Elliott Management - which became EMC's fifth-largest shareholder when it revealed a 2 percent stake in July - has since been urging the company to spin off publicly traded Palo Alto software maker VMware, saying the sell could substantially boost its stock price, the New York Post reported . EMC may also target other assets to sell.
