Stepan Co. , the Northfield specialty-chemical maker, said Tuesday that it returned to profitability in the fourth quarter, in part because the latest period wasn't saddled with charges like the year-ago period was.

Net income at Stepan was $1.6 million, or 15 cents a diluted share, up from last year's net loss of $5.6 million, or 63 cents a share.

Sales climbed 19 percent, to $342.3 million from $288.2 million.

In last year's fourth quarter, Sepan recorded $3.4 million in charges related to a legal settlement and remediation reserves. It had $2.8 million in severance costs related to staff reductions in Europe, and a bigger-than-normal $1.8 million expense for deferred compensation. Read more
