Mill uncertainty remains in Mackenzie, Fort St. James

Pope and Talbot's former pulp mill in Halsey, Ore., is expected to restart soon, now that it's been bought, but the communities of Fort St. James and Mackenzie continue a waiting game as the bankruptcy of the Portland, Ore. based company continues to unfold.

B.C. cabinet shuffle puts familiar face in Finance

"There's even the same old, grungy couch," he observed Monday. What has changed since he left is the new carbon tax, which comes into effect next week.

The new Forests Minister, former agriculture minister Pat Bell, will face a tough re-election battle if there is no measurable progress in his portfolio. In his own riding, towns such as Mackenzie have been virtually emptied of jobs. Mr. Bell was cautious in projecting any kind of turnaround and would not promise any mills reopening in his riding before the next election.

Campbell shuffles cabinet ahead of May 2009 election

B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell is making some major changes to his cabinet as he prepares for an election less than a year away.

Campbell is also shuffling some of the current cabinet ministers. Colin Hansen returns to his former position as finance minister, replacing the outgoing Carole Taylor, and Pat Bell is the new forests minister, leaving the agriculture post.

Minn. investment firm buys shuttered Oregon mill

A Minnesota investment firm has been cleared by a bankruptcy judge to purchase Halsey's Pope & Talbot pulp mill, which put 180 people out of work when it closed in May.

Officials at Wayzata Investment Partners have declined to comment on their future plans for the mill. The Minnesota firm, which specializes in private equity and hedge funds, purchased the mill for $31.15 million.

Mackenzie pulp mill faces uncertain future

Canfor's decision to shut down its sawmill at Mackenzie ends the last remaining supply of wood chips in the northern resource town needed to re-start the idled Pope & Talbot pulp mill......... Receiver Mike Vermette has already received bids for the Pope & Talbot mills and is to report to B.C. Supreme Court Friday on whether a quick sale is possible. Coincidentally, at the same hearing, Canfor is applying to have its chip supply agreement with Pope & Talbot cancelled
