FirstEnergy Corporation: Recovering Utility

FirstEnergy is a utility in transition and recently had to cut its dividend to finance the closure of inefficient power plants; The company is retreating from deregulation to shield itself from the vicissitudes of the market and has submitted a rate plan to regulators to accomplish this goal; FirstEnergy stock pays a good dividend that, after the cut, should be sustainable and pays patient investors to wait for the company's rebuilding plans to come to fruition. A few weeks ago, I mentioned that the Farmer's Almanac was predicting a harsh winter and that utilities might not be a bad play in such an environment.

Concern over cracks at Davis Besse

Groups that oppose Davis-Besse's continued operation want a formal hearing to present evidence about hairline cracks that have developed, and continue to grow, in the nuclear reactor's shield building since the utility applied weather sealant in 2012. In a filing Monday night with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's licensing board, critics claim to have documents that show FirstEnergy wasn't as transparent and forthcoming about the issue as it should have been when the utility divulged information about the new cracks in the fall of 2013.
