Smokin' the Sound expected to draw large crowds

“Some of the boat owners will have their own helicopters so we could have, on a given race, 8 to 10 helicopters in the air”

It's that time of year again - large boats racing at speeds of almost 150 mph through local waters.

A DEA/Coast Guard intervention? A big budget Hollywood action pic starring Bruce Willis? Nah. It's the (nearly annual) Smokin' The Sound, set to run April 5-6.

It's fast becoming a regional tradition, one that has the potential to continue to draw big bucks to the area.

'This is our fourth race,' promoter Rusty David said to the Sun Herald recently. 'We ran in 2005 and 2007, but we missed 2006 because of Hurricane Katrina. We are excited and if we can get three race dates in a row, we can make it a premier tourism event on the Coast. It's showing that class already. These teams bring in 500 and 600 people to the race, that's high-dollar clients. Read more

Hot rodder cruised in 'Isle Style'

“We're going to take it and, of course, make a hot rod out of it. Put a hot rod motor in it, four-wheel independent suspension. Stuff like that.”

'American Hot Rod' personality Boyd Coddington, 63, died Wednesday, but his ties to the Coast remain.

A 1940 Ford Woody that Coddington customized inside and out in 'Isle Style' for the Isle of Capri Casinos is on display in the second floor lobby of the parking garage. Coddington dedicated the $300,000 car at the 2006 Cruisin' the Coast.

The star's trademark Hawaiian shirts matched the tropical theme of the resort and the hot turquoise accents on the car make it a real eye-catcher. Rich Westfall, community development director at Isle of Capri Biloxi, said 'people go by it every day and just drool.' Read more
