Hunger strike 'just threats'

Kunta Kenyatta struggles to describe the 33 months he spent in the tight four walls of a super-maximum security cell at the Ohio State Penitentiary.

'It's extreme isolation, sensory deprivation. It's hard to explain really,' said Kenyatta, 39, out since 2001.

Supermax prisons _ where inmates spend roughly 23 hours a day locked in soundproofed cells _ were trendy when Ohio cut the ribbon on its angular, steel-bedecked penitentiary April 9, 1998.

9 Md. Correctional Officers Fired In Probe

The state prison agency says it has fired nine correctional officers in an investigation of alleged brutality against an inmate at Roxbury Correctional Institution near Hagerstown.

At least eight of the officers had previously been recommended for firing for their alleged involvement in the beating of an inmate on March 8th and 9th.

The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services says it also is investigating alleged assaults on seven inmates at the North Branch Correctional Institution near Cumberland on March 6th. Read more
