'Richard Estes' Realism': Oct. 10-Feb. 8 at Smithsonian American Art Museum

Back in 1968, when art historian Linda Nochlin organized the "Realism Now" show at Vassar College, she brought together artists from both coasts of the U.S. who had all independently begun practicing a curious kind of painting. In the wake of Pop Art, artists like Robert Bechtle, Chuck Close, and Richard Estes began creating flat, affectless, meticulously detailed images of modern life.
