I am a current student at the University of Southern Mississippi. I am entering the fall semester of 2009 as a senior and will graduate in May of 2010. The extra cost of $85 for a parking decal that will be brought upon me is totally ridiculous. The parking garage that is supposedly being built in our my favor will never be utilized by me and many other current students. I think it is preposterous for current students to have to put forth the funds to build this $14 million dollar project. Instead, Southern miss should utilize the anonymous funds of $6 million that was given to them to start the project and start charging the students that arrive after the construction is complete. Also, we will all be put out of over 400 parking spots that were available last year which was already not enough. If anything, we should be charged less than the previous $50 per decal for the arrangements we are being brought upon us. Another suggestion is cutting the faculties pay to help fund this project. Students are paying hard earned money to gain an education and should not be subject to such charges. The faculty of this school is provided with front row parking and most of them have designated parking spots. They are not subject to the hassle of trying to find a parking spot every morning when arriving to campus. I don’t understand why the school insists on the students to pay for this sudden change.
