New chancellor at Stony Brook: We need to boost SUNY

Full story: Newsday.com

How come I can't comment on Pete Kings "tirade" against Michael Jackson? Funny how Newsday stifles discussion and opinion on certain topics. Thank God for a politician with COURAGE to say the truth.

There is no need to raise tuition to brand SUNY. The focus of first-rate educational institutions needs to be on academics, not sports. And Stony Brook needs a law school NOW.

Totally agree about the lack of a flagship school hurting the SUNY system. I also totally disagree that Stony Brook should be made a flagship.

What they should do is cut about half of the joke campuses we have operating and dragging down the budget such as Old Westbury and Farmingdale. Buy out Syracuse and turn it into a flagship school. Syracuse already has the name recognition and if you improved its facilities it'd go a long way.

Also hate to break it to the person above me but having big sports programs help build name reputation whether you like it or not. Which school do you think has more name recognition nationally Ohio State or Stony Brook?

Its beyond time that the SUNY system receives an update as most of the campuses are out of date and out of their league.

Chancellor Zimpher is right on. SUNY should focus on the Big Six. How SUNY Buffalo has been able to hijack this "flagship" discussion is beyond me. They are all research centers and should be treated the same. By the way, UC has 10 campuses and 7 of 10 UC campuses beat EVERY SUNY Center. UC proves that we can have more than 2 campuses be competitive. We don't need to cut six down to two to have nationally ranked universities.

What is so interesting is that you already have two schools Binghamton and Geneseo that have have over 90% of their students comming ranking in tier one profiling system SUNY uses. No other SUNY's come close.

Both appear on every list of top schools. These schools compete with top privates for students. Stony Brook and SUNY Buffalo's undergraduate class can't compete. To be a "name school" you have to start raising standards.

I would allow Geneseo to become the "official" honors college of SUNY which it has been pushing for. It has the look, the academics, and feel of a private school it just needs the support!

Raising tuition or adding a law school is really less of a concern-ask the Stony Brook officials how many students/now doctors/medical professionals who graduate stay on LI--better yet-ask them how many stay in this COOUNTRY and they duck the answer-reality is (when they answer off the record) is that the majority of medical stdent go back overseas. Wake up folks...we educate-spend the money and other countries reap the benefits while we have a shortage of new doctors and skill medical professionals.

I work for SUNY and am completely against this proposal. If Zimpher wants to improve the SUNY system then she needs to urge the legislature to decrease the tuition rate. How can people from lower income families afford to send their children to college if the state system is making it impossible for them to afford it? That's what private colleges are for. The state and Chancellor Zimpher should care more about affordable education then lining their own pockets. Plus, this flagship idea will only give the campuses room to assign themselves more unnecessary allowances. I mean why does someone who makes more money then our own president of the USA need 90k for housing expenses each year? Greed....that’s all there is to that. We still have rich people only caring about themselves and how they can get richer. Zimpher and the state doesn't care about affordable education at all. I am telling you all right now that if they reduced the tuition the whole SUNY system would see a huge boost in enrollment. They will make more money because more people would be able to afford to go. Why are Zimpher and the states eyes closed to this simple fact? I guarantee that 90% of the states people will agree with me on this. So listen up Zimpher.....make education affordable and you will be a hero....now you just seem greedy and careless.

What noteworthy accomplishments do any of these school have under their belts?

Frankly, given the level of resources already fed to these schools; we've not seen much at all come out to "put themonthe map" in the acedemic or any other circles.

These are public colleges. Why is this imbeccile trying to brand and price point them?

Clearly, this is the wrong individual to head this education system.

The problems with the SUNY system don't come down to price. The only reason people even choose to go to them right now is because they are so cheap. Something needs to be done about the quality though.

I choose not to attend SUNY because there weren't enough options for students like me. I took AP and honors classes in high school, did well on my SATs, participated in community service etc. When it came down to choosing schools the only two state schools of any merit at all for a student like me were Geneseo and Binghamton. Out of the two of those Binghamton is a dump.

NYS residents need to take an honest look at the SUNY system. Where do you think a student would want to go if the schools cost the same price Penn State, Virginia, University of Florida, Clemson or Binghamton? Those are all premier state schools on the eastern seaboard; all of which come from states with a lower populace than NY and I'd be willing to bet lower taxes as well.

For most people, SUNY isn't cheap.

It is simply the least expensive alternative.

Free education is what seperates us from so many other nations.

As American business receives the greatest benefit from having such a highly trained workforce, it should be American business funding the bulk of the system.

This current system where many of our best and brightest become what is for all reasonable purposes indentured, is no way to ensure the long term viability of the American economy.

We should be looking at ways to provide absolutely free education tot he best and brightest and practically free education to the marginal students. Only then will the American economy experience the greatest benefit.

However, that aside; we must also consider that we are providing college educations for too many students. Our economy can only absorb so many college diplomas. If you want to imrpvoe the stature of the schools, stop handing out seats to everyone and their mother. That will improve the class demographic surprisingly well.

Frankly, if I'm gogint to end up a tens or hundreds of thousands in debt, I'm going to invest that debt in a business or investment, not an education.

The "buy out Syracuse" idea came along 50 years ago under a former SUNY chancellor. He thought along the same lines you do...he was removed not long after. Syracuse has the higher athletic profile, true, but it will always be private. The SUNY Centers are continuing to grow, much to the chagrin of the private school forces that have controlled higher education in NYS for so long. SBU nad UB are AAU just like Syracuse. UA, SBU, and UB now have larger enrollments and higher research spending than Syracuse. They might never overtake Syracuse's athletic profile, but they will certainly raise their own.

Yup! Someone should shut down Old westbury... The state pays way to much for that piece of junk school. I agree that Stony Brook should not be the Flag Ship; however you can not knock its educational programs.

I support the Concrete Jungle being the Flag Ship.

As the parent of a child who just graduated from SUNY, with another child about to start in the fall, the only thing SUNY seems to be boosting is it's tuition and fees! Now this chancellor wants to charge even more for a SUNY education, when state funding has already steadily decreased over the past 20 or so years? New York families are already being hit with some of the highest taxes and cost of living in the nation. We can't all afford to send our kids to the Ivy League, or other expensive private colleges and universities. Please don't make a SUNY education for our children unaffordable as well.

My child just transferred from private to Old Westbury for business/acctg , cost is about 1/4 of private tuition. Is Old Westbury that bad? What are the problems. Please elaborate. Thank you!
