So with Curran currently earning $106,825 for a salary, will the Selectmen give him the max allowed instead of leaving room to give something for job performance ?
The Town Manager should be the highest paid Town Employee. Start him at the Police Chief salary, then move him to highest paid. That should be about $145,000.00, then $150,000.00 Pay the best man, to do the hardest job. |

hey, maybe correnti will let the guy do his job...i'm actually hopeful the entire BOS will put the town in the manager's hands...we'll see if correnti can behave
and yes, give him a decent salary...it doesn't need to be the max, but be fair and invest wisely...for a change |

Good Luck to Mr.Curran. He is stepping into a tough job. But, after watching his interview, I think he seems to be a good fit for what is needed in town. Time will tell. Let's hope the selectmen have learned their lessons and stop micromanaging.

Having grown up in Woburn, and seeing what Mr. Curran did with the schools and the center of town there, I am very excited to see him come here. I think he will be a great fit for the town, and I definitely think he will be able to hold his own here. Great job from the selection committee, and congratulations Board of Selectmen - you made a great choice.

The anti-correnti clowns are at it again. I thought he asked the most probing questions. He and Accomando displayed professionalism with the voting when they made their selections known and went with the majority to make it unanimous. I found it interesting that Curran, who was booted out of Woburn because of his tax and spend habits, was embraced by Lombardo and Rosa. As for Deslaurier-he seems to be trying to figure out what the hell is going on-why doesn't he speak clearly?
What impressed you most? His showing up ten minutes late? His stopping the interview for his cell phone? Or his monotone dribble that bored even the selectmen? Even if they had made up their minds before the interviews, the other two "prop" interviews that came afterward showed Curran for what he is and what others will find him to be: a 4-year-a-job wonder who will fit in with the other low class idiots that we let run our town. Enough with the butt kidding cronyism from the od buddies at the jail! |
You tell em, Scott CURRAN. He'll actually fit RIGHT in...the six of them will undress each other every week, and Billerica will continue to be a laughing stock. |
You are so right. The Screening Committee voted unanimously for Curran. The majority of Selectmen voted on the first ballot for Curran. It must be nice to be smarter than 14 people. You do have an ego problem!!! It must be n |
All were unanimous on one thing. They didn't want someone who knew the town as well as them coming in from a town where people actually know how to manage AND sometimes even get along...and maybe they wouldn't even have the usual "one up" on the manager. What's wrong? Didn't you want a good manager who would stay a while? Don't you live here? |
Billerica by-laws state that one of the qualifications to be town manager is "That he shall have served full-time as a City or Town Manager (under any title), Assistant City Manager or Assistant Town Manager (under any title) for a period of not less than five (5) years." I'm curious how Mr. Curran qualifies, as he has only been in such a role since 2006.
I agree... it seems it's much easier for Billerica to overlook a few by-laws to bring in someone without the necessary experience (allowing them to maintain control) rather than bring in someone who is actually looking to help turn the town around. |
__________ What are you talking about. The guy was a MAYOR. He served until the UNIONS wanted one of their own to screw up the city. BTW the guy who defeated Curran was just defeated for re-election. The other two guys, one cost his town millions for not being in control of himself, and the other was Asst. Manager of a town half Billericas size. This was a no-brainer except for a few connected people. Another BTW, how did the town make out last time when Correnti and Accomando didn't go along with the number one choice of the Screening Committee, Williams lasted what eight months and we had to start the whole process over again. The BOS, at least least the new majority got it right. Town 1 Special Interest 0 |
It's funny that you stress the fact that he was a MAYOR. That makes him qualified?? John Kerry is a SENATOR and Barack Obama is the PRESIDENT... you think that means that know jack squat about being a TOWN MANAGER?? It's apples and oranges. There's a reason these by-laws are in place, and there's a reason the selectmen chose to ignore them. Both point to the fact that Curran isn't qualified. |
__________ I know this may difficult for you to do, but take five minutes and go to the official Woburn City web-site. While you are there, go to the responsibilities of the Mayor. The Mayor of Woburn, is not like the Mayor of Lowell, who is a fiquer head. The Mayor of Woburn has more responsiblities than any Town Manager in the State, and surely more than the TM of Billerica. Considering Curran was a Maynard Town Administrator and 4 years from a strong Mayor city, he has more than enough experience than most town Managers and didn't have the baggage of the second choice that cost his town millions in law suits, or complete lack of management experience the third candidate had.(BTW any other title) It is a sad thing, when there are some out there throwing bombs, before the guy even gets hired. Give him a couple of years if he doesn't work out NEXT. |
Couple things... no matter how many websites you visit, you won't find any that show a mayor's responsibilities as the same as a town manager's. Maybe you should take five minutes and look at Curran's interview where he says himself that a mayor position is very dissimilar from a town manager position. "More responsibilities" doesn't mean the same responsibilities... I promise there's a reason the by-laws are in place. I assure you I'm not blindly hurling grenades... I'm tossing them in the direction of a candidate who doesn't meet the necessary qualifications to be manager of my town. Some of us actually want leadership... |

Curran had the job in the bag well before the meeting. The interviews were just for show. The inside story was well known. Once again, those in power sold us out for a tax and spend liberal. My brother lives in Woburn and his taxes went through the roof with Curran-that's why he got bounced.
Once again, READ THE TOWN of BILLERICA GENERAL BYLAWS. To qualify for appointment to Town Manager, he/she must have been a Town Manager, Town Administrator or Asst. with that or "ANY OTHER TITLE". The Screening Committee and the Board of Selectmen all considered the title Mayor from the City of Woburn (strong mayor government) as another title. I agree and maybe you are in the the small minority that may think otherwise. Actually I think the guy from Concord (nice guy) was not qualified because of Concords size and his minor managerial experience, but that's mine thought, if the BOS chose him it would have been legal. In my opinion the BOS did a good job this time. They selected the number one choice, not like last time when they skipped the number one choice and we paid dearly for that mistake. |
I cannot say if Curran will be good or bad since he hasn't started the job but I can see the decision being made about Curran long before we all knew. Thats how Gov't works. I will say I do hope that the town takes swift action if he isn't able to do his job well and make the changes that this town needs. I am not a fan of taxes but I will pay them if we focus on making Billerica more competative. In my eyes a "town" the size of Billerica needs a mayor and not 5 Self serving selectmen to be calling the shots. Look where thats got us thus far. For all of our sakes I hope Mr. Curran comes through and doesn't use Billerica to line his pockets w/ green & I don't mean grass.
