East Hartford Family Receives Help After Fire

Josephine Douglas' husband was cooking fried chicken on the stove when a fire swept through their Burnside Avenue apartment complex a few months ago.

He and the rest of the family rushed out of the apartment without remembering to turn off the stove, causing a second fire that heavily damaged the apartment and destroyed much of the family's furniture and clothing.

Douglas, an employee at the Village at Buckland Court senior living community in South Windsor, recalled Wednesday how the fire left her family in chaos.

Several Fatal Crashes Over Holiday Weekend

Despite more troopers on the road and more sobriety checkpoints, this past 4th of July weekend was deadly, with at least seven fatalities on state and town roads, state police said.

'We had none last year,' state police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance said Monday. 'There's no rhyme or reason. We had extra people out there, our ticket numbers were up. We're doing everything we can do.'

Vance said police were unsure whether traffic would be heavier or lighter this holiday, given the high price of gasoline. But as it turned out, traffic volume was heavy throughout the weekend, which may have contributed to the high number of deadly accidents.

East Windsor Man Arrested In Connection With Robberies

An East Windsor man whom police describe as a heroin-addicted serial robber was arrested Wednesday in connection with April holdups in East Hartford and South Windsor. Thomas Phillips, 41, was arrested on warrants charging him with robbing five stores in the two neighboring towns. He lived on South Main Street in East Windsor until his May 3 arrest by Windsor Locks police, who say they found him in a motel lobby after he struggled with the owner of a package store in a bungled holdup, robbed a gas station convenience store, engaged police in pursuit and hid in the ceiling rafters of Bradley Bowl. Phillips was more successful in hiding from police April 23, when he climbed a tree outside his home as soon as he saw officers coming, the arrest warrants state.
