Impact fees questioned for Bearizona: New theme park faces hurdle at City Hall
WILLIAMS - Developers for the planned Bearizona theme park in Williams faced a hurdle at the recent meeting of Williams City Council, held Oct. 22 at city hall. Williams High School Lady Vikings fall to Sedona
Vikes stay close but unable to best rival
WILLIAMS - The Williams High School Lady Vikings Volleyball took on rival Sedona last week eventually losing in four close sets. The loss comes late in the season as the Vikes look ahead to the state finals.
Coach Jennifer Carter said the team played well, staying right with Sedona's effective offensive barrage, but just could not put enough points on the score board.

Williams Unified School District to hire health aide
Swine Flu clinic scheduled for Saturday
WILLIAMS - The 2009-2010 school year got off to a strong start. The problem is, so did this year's flu season.
As a result, the Williams Unified School District Governing Board approved at its Oct. 14 meeting the creation of a temporary health aide position. The additional assistance was requested by School Nurse Linda Cline to help keep students and teachers healthy in the face of new flu strains such as the H1N1 virus. Cline said cases of the flu have doubled this year as compared to last year.

WILLIAMS - At a community meeting held Oct. 8, officials with the Kaibab National Forest apologized for the Twin Wildfire that resulted in evacuations in the city of Williams Oct. 2-5. The wildfire was the result of a prescribed burn project that got away from fire managers due to shifting winds that caused spot fires outside the perimeter of the scheduled burn. Outside investigators will review the incident and plan to publicly release their findings.

Phase one of Bearizona theme park scheduled to open in May
Park could lure more visitors to Williams
WILLIAMS - It looks like bears, wolves, mountain lions and buffalo will likely be moving back into the hills above the city of Williams. According to developer Sean Casey, the Bearizona theme park is expected to be up and running in its first phase by May 2010. The park will be located near the Highway 64 and Interstate 40 junction on a parcel of land previously owned by the Keethler family.

Slight employment growth expected by the end of 2010
The Research Administration (RA) of the Arizona Department of Commerce projects a continued loss of non-farm jobs for the 2009 through 2010 forecast time period with a decrease of 195,800 jobs, or a loss of 7.5 percent. Projected job losses for 2009 have increased by 32,300 from the April forecast of 146,000, while the projected losses in 2010 have decreased by 4,200 as the result of a gradually improving economy.

WILLIAMS - A roughly 1,000-acre control burn three miles southwest of Williams implemented on Oct. 1 became a wildfire Oct. 2 when shifting winds caused spot fires to ignite outside of the burn project's borders. Sixty-four homes were evacuated with many other residents worried that the fire would continue to burn out of control. By Oct. 6, life began to return to normal with firefighters largely in control of the fire, evacuations lifted and Williams Elementary-Middle School and Williams High School reopened.
