WHITSETT, Jun 06, 2013 -- Lenovo, which late last year announced plans to begin PC production in North Carolina, showed off its new assembly plant here Wednesday to officials eager to trumpet the company's investment in domestic manufacturing.

Chinese computer maker Lenovo celebrated the opening of its first U.S. manufacturing plant in Whitsett, N.C., on Wednesday.

Three business reasons - quicker, closer and custom - prompted computer maker Lenovo Group to open its first U.S. manufacturing operation in North Carolina instead of low-cost foreign locations like Mexico or China, its North American president said.

The facility, Lenovo's first such U.S. operation, hosted Gov. Pat McCrory , who echoed statements made by his predecessor, Beverly Perdue , when Lenovo first made the expansion announcement last year.

Lenovo, which has for years operated a distribution hub in Whitsett, will on June 5 host a ceremony unveiling domestic production of Think-branded notebooks as well as desktop PCs, tablets, engineering workstations and servers.
