Broward superintendent: Hold off on proposed school in west Broward
Plans for a new high school in western Broward suffered a setback Tuesday, with Broward Schools Superintendent James Notter recommending the School Board reject offers to buy land and, instead, wait to see whether the school is still needed.
With asking prices significantly higher than the appraised value for the sites in Davie and Weston, Notter recommends the board hold off buying land for the proposed high school, temporarily dubbed MMM.
Land developer Ron Bergeron wants $19.8 million for his 30-acre site in Weston, double the average appraisal value of $9.5 million. And the asking price of $13 million for the roughly 30 acres in Davie - owned by brothers Daniel, Troy and Wayne Weekley - is nearly 73 percent more than its average appraised value of $7.6 million.

Weston tennis center uses larger practice balls to improve play
Set yourself into a bad habit in a sport, and chipping it away is like breaking up cement with a fork. That includes tennis, where pros strive to get beginners to groove their stroke when they first learn the game, so they can advance to other facets.

Maintenance workers test skills in Turf Rodeo
“On the rec [administrative] side, we go to conferences and network all the time. This is the only opportunity for them to do something similar.”
Who works a Bobcat the fastest? Who's the best leaf-blower operator? And why spend a day finding out?
The answers - Steve Strobridge, of Deerfield Beach, (Bobcat) and Tony Taylor , of Lauderdale Lakes, (leaf blower) - could be found earlier this month at South Florida's 16th annual Turf Rodeo, a day for municipal maintenance workers to test their skills and see recent equipment upgrades.
About 300 workers from about 20 recreation agencies signed up, including Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach, Lauderdale Lakes, Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Pembroke Pines and the Broward County parks system. The event was at Mills Pond Park in Fort Lauderdale. Read more

Teen Health: School board may ban energy drinks
“These hormones provide an endless supply of natural energy. Further, children do not understand the concept of moderation and caution, which needs to be practiced with energy drinks. Kids always think if one is good, more must be better.”
Four teenagers from Falcon Cove Middle School in Weston were taken to a hospital emergency room this month, their hearts racing and bodies dripping with sweat.
The substance that sent them there was the energy and weight-loss drink Redline, which packs all the caffeine of coffee, and more: Its half-dozen added ingredients are claimed to lift mood and energy levels, lower appetite -- even improve memory.
The temporary scare -- the students are fine now -- has Broward County School Board members ready to ban high-octane energy drinks from school campuses. Read more

Sites in Davie, Weston considered for new high school
“We need a school built somewhere. We need a school built quickly.”
School officials are looking at two parcels in Davie and two in Weston as a home for a high school to relieve crowding at Weston's Cypress Bay High.
But at least two Davie leaders are dead-set against building the school in their town.
'The School Board needs to step up and approve one of the two sites in Weston,' Councilwoman Susan Starkey told a school official Wednesday evening. 'I'm not sure our residents want a school in that location.'
Vice Mayor Bryan Caletka agreed, saying the town had already taken enough land off the tax rolls for education facilities. Read more

Weston tentatively OKs prohibiting fishing in city-owned waterways
The city may be angling to hang up a 'No Fishing' sign.
Commissioners tentatively have approved a plan that would prohibit people from fishing in city-owned waterways or from city bridges.
The measure, which requires a second vote, passed 3-1 Monday.
Commissioner Daniel Stermer dissented, saying it might not withstand a court challenge.
'I don't want to pass an ordinance that flies in the face of the state constitution,' Stermer said.
The commission is expected to take a second vote on Nov. 19. Read more
