Case of neglected horses | Family did things their own way
“Why in the world would somebody have all these animals you can't take care of?”
Perhaps the farm, the historic plantation home and 100 Arabian horses could have put Terry Trexler back on his feet again.
After whipping up a good-sized law practice in a one-man office in Sumter, Trexler's license was suspended in 1998 and he was later disbarred when two dozen complaints surfaced about the way he treated clients and handled their money.
That summer, his parents took out a loan to buy a $303,500 ante-bellum home, one of Sumter County's oldest, and 41A1 2 acres on the outskirts of town. Read more

Outdoor center to help open up forest, park to more hikers
“People say, 'I want to go out, but I've never been out on a trail in that area. I'm uncomfortable doing it on my own,'”
The dirt roads in and around Manchester State Forest aren't all clearly marked. The small staffs at the state forest and adjacent Poinsett State Park aren't easy to find to ask for help on weekends. The Poinsett Gunnery Range signs along S.C. 261 are foreboding to the uninitiated.
Those are just a few of the reasons people haven't discovered some of the most interesting trails in the Midlands. A new effort by the Palmetto Conservation Foundation aims to change that.
With financial assistance from Santee Cooper, the foundation will open the Palmetto Trail High Hills Outdoor Center at Batten's on March 1. It's a four-month experiment to raise awareness about the recreation opportunities in western Sumter County (with a little of northwestern Clarendon County thrown in). Read more
