Jamaican Consul General Geneive Brown Metzger Visits Hartford
“It would be such a great service to the community”
When the prime minister of Jamaica asked Geneive Brown Metzger to be the island nation's newest consul general in New York City , she was surprised. She was, after all, a public relations executive in Westchester County, not a career diplomat.
But while she was mulling it over, she remembered all the complaints she had heard from Jamaican immigrants about issues they faced in the U.S. and in their homeland.
And she realized there was really only one answer she could give. 'This was my opportunity not to just complain, but to do something about it,' said Brown Metzger in an interview. Read more

“A resident has no control over that. You don't chose a nursing home based on whether it buys its cable in bulk”
It's midmorning at Grove Manor. Television sets are on in patients' rooms as nurses make their daily rounds in the 60-bed Waterbury nursing home. Voices and images on the screens broadcasting news, sports and entertainment link the patients to the outside world, and help keep monotony at bay.
Every time that link gets broken, residents are sent a bill. When residents change rooms in the home, even if it's just down the hall, Comcast Corp. charges them to rehook their cable.
The $29.95 fee is almost half the $63 personal allowance residents insured by Medicaid are allowed to keep from their pensions and Social Security checks each month. Read more

“Had the prosecutor, John Connelly, not reduced the charges, this guy would still be in prison, and the prosecutor has some explaining to do to the public.”
While Republicans and Democrats continued to spar Tuesday over how best to fight violent crime, the prosecutor whose office eight years ago locked up the ex-convict implicated in Connecticut's latest horrific home invasion responded angrily to what he called 'outrageous comments' by politicians who criticized his handling of the case 'without knowing the facts.'
'Before these politicians make comments about these cases, they should know what they are talking about,' Waterbury State's Attorney John Connelly said. 'For them to make these statements is outrageous.' Read more
