I was employed at Mandell's Drug Store between the years 1949 through 1954. When I was sixteen Mr. Mandell assisted me in obtaining an Apprentice Pharmacist license from the State of Pennsylvania. Six years later I graduated from the Duquesne University School of Pharmacy. When we started using the automatic Horlick's Malted Milk dispenser Mr. Mandell gave me the old aluminum can we had been using with the "Horlick's" name on it. I still have it. He also presented me with a new Parkers ink pen when I graduated from Dormont High School in 1952. I estimate that I worked over 10,000 hours at 727 Washington Road during those five years. The penny candy display and the snow cone machine attracted the kids from close by Washington School and Mellow Junior High. On the morning after THE BIG SNOW in November 1950 Mr. Mandell phoned me and asked if I could make it to the store. I walked from Dormont out Washington Road in snow up to my hips...and met Mr. Mandell at the store. We opened the door at 9 AM...right on time. I worked thirteen hours that day. Three of us "soda jerks" at Mandell's went on to become pharmacists. Two graduating from Duquesne and one from Pitt.

George, do you have any photos of the Mandell's drugstore? My dad is 85 and I've been videotaping an ongoing interview with him about his life. He had fond memories of going to a malt shop with my mom in 1941, in Mt. Lebanon. In talking with the lady, M.A. Jackson, who's doing the history on Mt. Lebanon, she says it may have been Mandell's. It's late here, so will call my dad tomorrow morning. I'm trying to include photos as part of the dvd of my dad's life, so far. Please let me know if you have any photos of either the inside, or outside of the drug store. Thank you so much!
