With just days to go until Election Day, Gov. Ernie Fletcher reached into his pocket and pulled out the gay card.
Fletcher and his Republican allies warned voters that Democratic challenger Steve Beshear had gay and lesbian friends, that he backed 'every homosexual cause,' that he would legalize same-sex marriage, promote adoption by gay couples and put more gay teachers in schools. Walter H. Smith, 83, was still busy late yesterday polishing the speech he'll give before officials from Deauville, France, in downtown Lexington today.
'It's been a job,' he said. 'But it means a lot.'
Smith, a Navy veteran of the 1944 Normandy invasion, will be thanking the Deauville group for the French medals they gave to him and other Normandy veterans when the French delegation visited Lexington in April 2005. The medals honored soldiers, sailors and airmen who served during the Normandy operation, which led to the liberation of France in World War II. Read more

Chlorine leak in Harrodsburg prompts evacuation
A chlorine leak at the Harrodsburg Waste Water Treatment Plant caused the evacuation of 10 nearby residents on Saturday, but no one was hurt.
Capt. Terry Smith of the Harrodsburg Fire Department said a sensor detected a leak in a regulator on a 2,000-pound chlorine cylinder at about 8 a.m.
Smith said firefighters trained in handling hazardous materials came from Lexington and Versailles, and the leak was stopped by about 2:30 p.m.
In addition to the evacuation, residents of a nearby mobile home park were told to stay indoors until the problem was resolved, Smith said. Read more
