Woman seriously injured when car spooks horse

A West Seattle woman spent a week in the hospital after falling off her horse in an incident on Vashon's west side, where she says a car came close to her horse and revved its engine. Susan McLain, who boards and rides her horse on Vashon, suffered 11 broken ribs, a broken collarbone, multiple fractures in her back and a collapsed lung after falling offer her horse on SW 220th Street, near Wax Orchard Road.

Some hope island will go 'Salmon Safe'

In the coming week, representatives from the environmental organization Stewardship Partners will visit the island twice with information about their Salmon Safe certification program, part of an effort to get more island farms and other organizations to consider their environmental impact, not just on the island's salmon streams, but on Puget Sound in general. With help from a grant from the King Conservation District, Stewardship Partners has already certified five island farms as Salmon Safe, meaning their practices protect water quality and fish habitat.

A Vashon man was booked into jail last weekend and could face charges after shooting a gun in a suspected drug house. The man, a 38-year-old Vashon resident, entered a house on the 16000 block of 109th Avenue SW at about 7 p.m. Saturday.

Native artist will speak about Coast Salish art and culture

Contemporary Northwest native artist Shaun Peterson is slated to give a free presentation about Coast Salish art and culture for the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Association's ongoing exhibition about Vashon natives, at 3 p.m. Saturday, at the Penny Farcy Center next to the museum. Following in the footsteps of his ancestors who inhabited the shores of the Salish Sea, Peterson learned his craft under the tutalage of his elders - master artisans who shared their technique, insight and discipline with him.

Help Save the salmon: Two bands perform for free at the Bike

In an effort to raise awareness about the potentially tragic plight of the Northwest's wild salmon, Vashon's Fendershine and the Seattle band Big Dirt will play a free show at 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Red Bike. The two bands are particularly concerned with the proposed construction of the Pebble mine in Bristol Bay, Alaska.

In 2013, Harbor School launched a comprehensive Arts Initiative to expand the scope of the school's art curriculum, but also to strategically improve our campus design through artistic endeavors which would enhance our day-to-day environment and beautify the community in which we live. New water taxi to be named after ferry activist

Vashon's new water taxi, set to hit the water in 2015, will be named the Sally Fox, after a late islander who advocated for Vashon's passenger-only ferry service. The name was chosen by voters in a contest put on by the King County Ferry District earlier this summer.
