Habitat for Humanity volunteers, Jim Nuehring and Jamie Calderwood work to remove a set of cabinets from the kitchen of Mike and Heather Mundell of Vacaville. The Mundells are remodeling their kitchen and donated their old appliances and cabintets to Habitat for Humanity.

Birthday party brings writers, musicians in Fairfield

Musicians from the Young Artists Conservancy played, State Assemblyman Jim Frazier spoke and after the birthday celebration, Fairfield resident Lincoln Beals, 78, talked about writing his first book. He was one of 15 local authors at the Solano County Library Foundation event marking 20 years since the group's beginning in 1994.

Dancing Del Santo, balloon man and Balliamo are among Italian Festival highlights

Connecticut-born Frank Del Santo, 81, of Fairfield danced Sunday at the Italian Festival at Pippo Ranch where Molly, the 11-year-old kissing llama, was among the attractions at the 17th annual festival. Her mobile petting zoo that bears her first name includes Molly, whose kissing is more a way to get close enough to people to take their measure, Marshall said.

Vacaville commission considers housing, commercial developments

Health-related businesses could be cropping up in Phase 3 of the Nut Tree in Vacaville, located between East Monte Vista Avenue and Interstate 80. Proposed is a chiropractic office and an as-yet unnamed health and beauty-type business totaling approximately 2,400 square feet. "The applicant has indicated the proposed uses would benefit the shopping and restaurant experience in Phase 3," wrote Peyman Behvand, city planner, in his staff report to the Planning Commission.

Editorial: Council did right; mediation is fair

It was encouraging to hear Friday that members of Local 39 and the city of Vacaville had agreed to enter mediation starting Tuesday and that the union workers would abandon their picket lines and head back to work. The union was finding little support from the general public, most of whom are not government employees and have a more realistic view of what is fair and not fair in the realm of compensation.

VPAT sets four-concert slate

The Vacaville Performing Arts Theatre has a new manager and has announced a new, four-concert slate of shows for its so-called "season of shows." In a press release, manager Rachel Morgan said the lineup starts Nov. 7 with Starship, starring vocalist Mickey Thomas, followed by Art Garfunkel on Nov. 16, Gentleman's Rule on March 26, and Jim Brickman on May 9. Gifted with a high but soulful tenor, Thomas first made his mark in 1976 as lead vocalist on the Elvin Bishop Band hit "Fooled Around and Fell in Love."

Pastor to face trial next week on arson allegation

A jury trial for the pastor of a Vacaville Baptist church accused of the January firebombing of an ex-girlfriend's home is set to begin next week, attorneys confirmed Friday in Solano County Superior Court. Mark Lewis, pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church appeared in the Fairfield courtroom of Judge Peter B. Foor where attorneys in the case confirmed that they would begin the process of selecting a jury at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Conservation district's fall plant sale set for Oct. 18

Solano RCD will hold its annual Fall Plant Sale from 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 18 at the SRCD's Conservation Education Center at 6390 Lewis Road east of Vacaville and will feature beautiful drought-tolerant California natives and regionally appropriate plants. Many of the plants on sale, such as California fuchsia, California holly, and Western redbud, can be viewed in the SRCD's Watershed-Friendly Demonstration Garden, which is also located at the Education Center site.
