Connection to Skytop complete after years of setbacks

PORT MATILDA -- After years of delay and two recent weeks of false starts, the state opened a big and sweeping section of Interstate 99 on Monday, easing the drive back and forth to work for thousands and giving long-haul truckers reason avoid this tiny borough.
The move pushed I-99 into Centre County from the southwest for the first time, extending the four-lane limited access highway 14 miles from Bald Eagle village in Blair County to Skytop Mountain in Centre County's Patton Township.
That section is part of the 30 miles and more than $800 million worth of I-99 in Centre County that links the turnpike at Bedford with Interstate 80 in Bellefonte. But a 1.4-mile section at an acid-rock drainage cleanup site at Skytop remains a broken link whose completion date is still a year off. Read more

Girl reportedly assaulted on way home from school
A 13-year-old girl reported that a man in his early 20s grabbed her while she was walking home from school Thursday in Tyrone and attempted to assault her, Tyrone police report.
The man -- described as 5 foot 2 inches tall, white with a deep voice, wearing an orange hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans at the time of the incident -- walked up behind the girl on Wertz Alley near Bressler's market, grabbed her and held her arms to her side, police said. She told police he repeatedly told her she was pretty while attempting to remove her sweatshirt, police report. Read more
