The annual Turners Community Picnic will begin at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 12 at Turners Station Mercantile.

Dozens of Turners Station residents, newcomers and long-timers both, arrived with ideas that ranged from adding new amenities to preserving the cultural roots of the 188-acre enclave that is one of the country's oldest African-American communities.

A man and a woman were shot early Sunday, one of them fatally, on a street in the Turners Station neighborhood in southeastern Baltimore County, police said.
