Coal company charges a first for attorney general
Violations at the R&D Coal Co.'s Buck Mountain Slope mine in Schuylkill County were so egregious, officials say, that the state attorney general's office was pressed to do something it had never done before: Launch a criminal investigation of a mine fatality.
Following a grand jury presentment, the state attorney general on Wednesday filed involuntary manslaughter and other charges against company owner David Zimmerman, his son and foreman Steven Zimmerman, both of Pine Grove, and miner Jeffrey Klinger of Tremont. Read more

Schuylkill County man found guilty of homicide by vehicle
A Schuylkill County man who ignored pleas from friends and relatives to not drive after he had been drinking, then crashed his car, killing his girlfriend, has been found guilty of homicide by vehicle and related charges.
Neil Ryan Hatfield, 24, of 325 W. Main St., Tremont Township, will be sentenced in the Aug. 19 death of Shannon Sullivan, 22, of Pine Grove, after President Judge William Baldwin reviews a presentence investigation.
After listening to two days of testimony, the jury late Tuesday also found Hatfield guilty of aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence, involuntary manslaughter, driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance, driving under the influence of a high level of alcohol, recklessly endangering another person and reckless driving.
