Bucks to study if it should favor unions in contracts
Bucks County has empaneled a seven-member study group to look at whether to adopt a policy critics say would give union construction companies a leg up on major county building projects.
The task force will investigate and recommend whether to enact ''responsible contractor'' ordinances that could affect the awarding of construction contracts worth as much as $150 million in upcoming work.
The ordinances, which have been adopted by a variety of municipalities in Bucks County and beyond, put requirements on contractors hoping to bid on public projects -- often including proof of apprenticeship programs like the ones operated by a variety of trade unions.

Of those, 19 are in Upper Bucks -- including five in Tinicum Township, three in Milford Township and two each in Nockamixon, Haycock and Hilltown townships -- a signal of the changed priorities amid concerns the state hasn't done enough to keep its bridges safe. Read more
