Alexander County service helps immigrants find their new lives
“Because I'm an immigrant myself”
Alexander County's immigrant population is still small compared with neighboring counties, but it's growing -- and a new service is helping to meet the newcomers' special needs.
The Alexander International Center grew out of a local pastor's concern for newly arrived Latinos.
Though it's still a small, part-time service, it's getting its footing as volunteer organizers try to model it after similar centers in the area.
Alexander's service is unique because it reaches out to all immigrants instead of just one group. The county has populations of Latinos, Hmong and Laotians. Read more

Indiana-based Jasper Group, a commercial furniture maker for nearly 80 years, will create 40 local jobs in an abandoned furniture factory building.The plant will be in a 93,000-square-foot facility off N.C. 16 South that Kincaid Furniture vacated a year ago.

Alexander County: Good news for athletic folks
“It's been a long struggle for us.”
Alexander County will soon have expanded recreation opportunities in its first permanent YMCA facility, and could also get an aquatic center if the county can win the money for it.
The YMCA of Alexander County, which has operated in adapted space since starting programs in 1998, now has the money for a permanent building.
A 17,500-square-foot facility with a fitness center, locker rooms, child care area, offices, multipurpose room and meeting room will go up on 16.5 acres off Black Oak Ridge Road near downtown Taylorsville. Outdoors, there will be a basketball court, baseball field and a soccer field. Read more
