Tama Police continue Cherry Lake stocking

Tama's historic Lincoln Highway Bridge is in need of structure and surface repairs

As the 100th anniversary of construction approaches next year, the Lincoln Highway Bridge in Tama has served travelers from the early days of mud roads to carrying traffic on the hard-surface Lincoln Highway and U.S. 30 travelers. Today it's the eastern gateway into Tama on East 5th Street from Business Highway 30 to U.S. Highway 63. Just park in the adjoining Lincoln Highway Bridge Park and you might be surprised at the amount of traffic traveling across the bridge these days.

Tama Co. Supervisors By: Joyce Wiese

County Engineer Lyle Brehm gave a road report to the Tama County Board of Supervisors, Larry Vest, Kendall Jordan and Dan Anderson, Monday morning, September 8, at their regular meeting. Brehm reported they were in Buckingham pouring concrete on one street there.

Nathaniel Scott Akers, 31, Traer, entered guilty pleas to a series of charges stemming from a domestic assault case on May 24. Akers was sentenced to a suspended two-year prison term and was fined $625 on a charge of assault on a peace officer. He was accused of assaulting Tama County Deputy Sheriff Bryan Ellenbecker during his arrest.

What's Happening at The Wieting

We had a special showing of "And so it Goes" on Thursday afternoon for the residents of the nursing homes in Tama-Toledo. The residents of the nursing facilities enjoy having these events offered to them in the daytime since most aren't able to get out later in the day.

T-T Car Show - Cruise set Sept. 20

Antiques, street rods, muscle cars and more will fill the streets of downtown Tama for the annual Car Show and Cruise on Saturday, Sept. 20. Following the awards ceremony at 4 p.m. the vehicles will cruise from downtown Tama to downtown Toledo and return.

Budget Inn Option signed

New family-style apartment housing on the closed Budget Inn motel site in Toledo now appears to rest solely on approval of funding from Community Development Block Grant 2008 flood money. Bob Rafferty, attorney for developer Newbury Living, confirmed in an email last week to Toledo City Clerk Janet Kriegel, an option on the property has been signed by the owner.

With the ongoing looting of the Iowa Juvenile Home / State Training School for Girls of its contents it would be wise to be watchful of the Western - Leander Clark College bell. Mounted on the west side of the campus it is a historical marker recognizing the colleges which formed the original campus in Toledo until closing in 1918.

Plea deal on cheating at casino gambling charge By John Speer Central Iowa Press Before Judge Fae Hoover-Grinde in Tama County District court in Toledo: A Cushing, Texas, man, Oscar Ortega Rios, 38, accused of cheating at gambling, a Class D felony, at the Meskwaki Bingo a Casino was fined $315 in a plea bargain agreement. The cheating charge was amended to 4th degree theft.

New development for old motel?

New life may be in store for the deserted Budget Inn motel property at South Broadway and U.S. Highway 30 in Toledo. Bob Rafferty, attorney for Newbury Living, West Des Moines, reported plans to the Toledo City Council on Monday night, Aug. 25. He said the company had offered $130,000 to purchase it and was awaiting a decision on the offer expected at midnight.

Dental care for man at University of Iowa

I have many fond memories of growing up in the Tama-Toledo area such as having spaghetti suppers at Big T with friends, running into people at Fareway who wanted to discuss the Trojan football season, and playing little league games at the Toledo Heights. The community has also been very supportive and kind to me and my family, such as through the overwhelming support we received after the passing of my sister.
