Underperforming Mount Airy casino now faces competition from Sands, 40 miles away in Bethlehem

Full story: The Morning Call

When Sands flung open the doors to its $743 million casino, state gaming officials had reason to smile at the prospect of being able to tax more than $1 million of new gambling revenues per day.

This is from the Express Times on the demolition of Broughal in the southside of Bethlehem, from a resident:

"Something could be done with Broughal and these kids deserve a chance," Eddie Rodriguez said. "They have nothing to do but get into trouble and get into drugs."

I know what these kids are going to do.... they are going to prey on the patrons of the Sands Slots PARLOR!!!

The kids on the southside have nothing more or less to do than any other children liveing in the valley.
There is no reason they can't find something to do other than crime and drugs. The southside parents don't take the time to parent, to keep and eye on what their kids are doing, or take care of their kids.

All teenagers in my hometown ever did was complain about how bored they were. Somehow none of us had it ever occur to us that being lowlife predators was a good way to pass the time. I suppose it's different when you're raised by wolves instead of civilized human beings.

I used to go to Mt. Airy but now the Sands is closer. I will end up deciding where I go most of the time by what comps I am given. So far Mt Airy has been fair with the comps I received.

If they think they’re in a BATTLE now, wait until the have to mail out casino monthly statements to those who are enrolled in their COMPCARD REWARD program, which happens to be about 90% of their patrons.

You can help save individuals and families from being destroyed by a compulsive casino addiction and at the same time make it an even playing field for those who have businesses that are now unarmed when competing with the casino comps. All you have to do is contact your state legislator and tell them you support (HB 553) and (SB 734) this legislation will make our BILLION DOLLAR casino operators mail their patrons monthly statements, showing their money and time spent gambling? This would enable not only the gamblers but also their family members to spot a loved one's gambling problem before it gets out of hand.

Open this link to view Gov. Rendell and others opinion on casinos mailing out monthly statements.

This is taken from the article:

''This was once the honeymoon capital of the East,'' Toth said.''We're going to start taking advantage of that. We are the only Pennsylvania casino that is a true destination.''

Talk about backing into the future! Maybe it was attractive 50 years ago when the highway system that we enjoy today was yet to be built and airline travel was very expensive. Yes, then it was a destination because there were few alternatives. Now people can travel most anywhere at a reasonable price.

I think that at best Mr. Toth will become a caretaker for the Mt. Airy Museum of Unrealizable Dreams.

The bottom line to all this is that the state way over-projected the amounts that would be netted at the casinos, in an effort to sell the idea to everyone. Does that surprise anyone? Now that the casinos are up & running, they'll claim that they're not making enough money to cut our tax bills as promised. The key word is "claim".
so what

There's a reason Mt. Airy was sitting vacant; no one wanted to go there at the prices they were charging. There's really nothing new to attract anyone other than a chance to waste more money in parlor aimed at continuing the scam that big winnings are only a button push away. The Sands will be the same way as soon as people come to their senses and realize that they don't have the resources to play slots and pay mortgages and grocery bills at the same time. But then again, they'll probably get yet another federal bailout at the expense of responsible taxpayers

The article the other day about the opening was sad. The piture they put in they put in there of the people waiting to open...no one was under 65! how many of them live on a fixed income and complain when the school taxes go up? i am 39 years old and I have never gone to a casino. i have no desire to waste that money. If they are retired and bored, go volunteer somewhere...non-profits are so understaffed in the valley. They would get many more rewards from doing that then gambling.

Mt. Airy gets what it deserves. Last year, I watched Mt. Airy rent-a-cops wrongfullly detains some people very late because they were beating the house. How do you beat the house in slots?

''This was once the honeymoon capital of the East,'' Toth said.''We're going to start taking advantage of that. We are the only Pennsylvania casino that is a true destination.''

LOL LOL! Ok first off I work at Sands and let me tell you *THIS* is a true destination in Bethlehem,PA! I've been to Mt.Airy in the past before I even worked here and they SUCKED. The hospitality was HORRIBLE! I stayed at the hotel and the way they greet you at the front desk is " can I help you" I mean ARE you serious!?? And the casino itself was not impressive! Food was ok, no live entertainment(like we'll have here) on the casino floor etc. Not only that theres NOTHING up there. The view sucks.. it has a golf course? Big deal!! But I can't believe that they even think they have a change against us! WE have history and a destination!! We are located on Bethlehem Steel's property.. and for me growing up around here too, has alot of meaning to alot of people! The theme is evident everywhere! WE also have Emeril's Chop House--who does Mt. Airy have.. NO ONE!? Their "high end restaraunt" isnt even open 7 days a week like Emeril's Chopse House is!

Free drinks while you are playing at the slots--Mt.Airy doesnt!

Also we have the area--the times of year: Musikfest(July/August),Celtic Fest(Sept.)Christmas and the Christmas Market(November-December)and so much more. We are the Christmas City as well.

Anyways you all get the idea, but what just makes me so mad is that Mt. Airy thinks they are "all that". FAR from it, I rather drive all the way to Atlantic City before I would go to Mt. Airy again(which I never will and can't anyways because I work at a Casino in PA).

Just see if for yourself--come to Sands and you'll never want to go to Mt. Airy again--esp. with the workers they have working up there too!!

I agree! It is VERY depressing, thats why I can't understand why it would even be called the 'honeymoon capital of the world'! I think I rather spend my honeymoon night in my own HOUSE before going to the Poconos! There are so many other places--the beach,Niagra Falls,Florida(esp. Disney) and so on.. but "The Poconos"! Yeah.. ok...

Does sands really think they can draw a new york and northern new jersey crowd to drive 1.5 hours to the middle of nowhere play on slot machines? I live in new york and laugh at of the money they've spend on advertisements for the sands at the port authority, showing young 20 and 30 somethings dressed in suits as if they were in vegas. Do they realize that for $20, I can get a round trip bus ticket to either AC or Foxwoods(only about a half hour drive longer) and the casinos will reimburse me the money? Also, I have other options to stay in other than the comfort inn.

For starters, I didn't even know that Mt. Airy was still around, let alone open.

Secondly, perhaps Mr. Airy may want to either fire the existing marketing department and hire a new one, or if they don't have one, perhaps invest in one. Why do you ask? See my first point.

Thirdly, Former Washington Redskins Head Coach Joe Gibbs (No, I'm not a 'Skins fan) had a picture in his office of a dinosaur. The caption underneath said, "Adapt or die." If Mt. Airy thinks that they can make little changes and still be the destination they were, they are sadly mistaken.

If I were Mr. Airy, I would change the name and do a Grand Re-opening, but with many wholesale changes.

I hope they both fail. Seniors who gamble better not complain when they can't make ends meet. The necessary items like foord and their medications, taxes, etc. should be their first concern.

LOL ok where is this "MIDDLE OF NOWHERE" you are talking about??? last thing I knew--Bethlehem,PA is not the middle of nowhere!? There is SO MUCH here. Also the bus (Trans Bridge Lines) running from PO their tickets are $32.00 and they are giving you back most of your money $20.00 in free slot play--so thats not a bad deal.. looks like you just want a free ride!?

Daily Horoscope for December 17

Pisces

If you want to make the best of the day you should lock yourself away and work on your own. This will make it easier to concentrate, especially if you're trying to focus on something that's fiddly or difficult. If you've got something on your mind at the moment it will be worth having a quiet word in someone's ear because they'll help you to get things into their proper perspective.
