'True Crime in the Civil War' to be topic of seminar

<![CDATA["True Crime in the Civil War" will be the topic of a seminar Tuesday, June 24, at 7 p.m. at the Sunfield United Brethren Church, at 8436 W. Grand Ledge Hwy. (M-43) in Sunfield. The Lansing/Sunfield Camp No. 17, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War is sponsoring the even as part of its commemoration of the Civil War Sesquicentennial Venture deep into the dark, dimly lit corners of the Civil War with Tobin T. Buhk. Eavesdrop on a trial by military commission; follow the condemned party as they head to the gallows for their final journey. Then meet Confederate Guerrilla Sue Monday, a man who dressed as a woman and terrorized the Union men tasked to hunt him down. See evidence that Sue was in fact the fiction of an inventive newspaper editor with an ax to grind. Then come face-to-face with the real man accused of Sue's crimes. See the seedy side of the conflict and meet some the characters who took the "Civil" out of the Civil War. Tobin T. Buhk is an author specializing in historic crimes. After spending a year as a morgue volunteer, he co-authored with Kent County Medical Examiner Dr. Stephen D. Cohle "Cause of Death" and "Skeletons in the Closet." His love of history combined with a fascination with true crime as led to several additional books, including "The Shocking Case of Helmuth Schmidt, Michigan's Original Lonely Hearts Killer," and his latest, "Michigan's Strychnine Saint." Admission is free and light refreshments will be served. The church is located approximately 1 2 mile west of the four corners of (Sunfield Hwy. and M-43).
