NC-based Marine from Va. killed in Afghanistan
A 28-year-old Marine from Virginia was killed while conducting combat operations in Afghanistan, the Defense Department said Wednesday. Strong was a critical skills operator assigned to the 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, according to a biography provided by the Marines.

No injuries reported in three-vehicle crash in Suffolk
The crash occurred about 12:30 p.m. at General Early Drive, according to a news release from Suffolk police. The preliminary investigation indicates that a minivan traveling west on U.S. 460 wsa trying to turn right onto General Early Drive when it was struck from the rear by a pickup truck.

Driver strikes crane along Route 58 in Suffolk
A driver has been transported to the hospital after crashing into a crane that was traveling across three lanes of traffic Monday morning, Suffolk Police said. Suffolk Police and Suffolk Fire & Rescue arrived on the scene of the crash along eastbound Route 58, near Welch Parkway and the SPSA Landfill, shortly after 7:30 a.m. Suffolk Police said preliminary investigation revealed the crane was traveling across three lanes of traffic when a passing vehicle struck the crane.

State police argue they can't release mug shots of two former cops charged with embezzlement
The arrest of former Windsor Police Chief Arlis "Vic" Reynolds turned into the case of the missing mug shot this week, as agencies pointed fingers over who was supposed to have Reynolds' processing paperwork. Ultimately, the Virginia State Police concluded Friday afternoon that they could not release the photos of Reynolds or another former police officer charged with embezzlement.

Chesapeake police probe string of vehicle break-ins
Police are investigating a recent rash of break-ins from vehicles parked at schools, community centers and athletic fields throughout the city - and they know of similar incidents in Suffolk. The thefts started Aug. 23, and 14 had been reported as of Thursday, said Officer Kelly O'Sullivan, a Chesapeake police spokeswoman.
Chinese food delivery driver robbed at gunpoint
An officer was dispatched to the China Moon Restaurant in the 900 block of N. Main Street for a report of an armed robbery, according to Diana Klink with the city of Suffolk. The officer was told that a delivery driver had been robbed at gunpoint of cash around 9:30 p.m. in the 300 block of Goodman Street.

Clyde Turner of Suffolk won the lottery twice recently, but his second bit of luck yielded enough to help his grandson through college. Turner won the $200,000 top prize in the Virginia Lottery's "Hit the Jackpot" game.

The 24-year-old victim says the two people with weapons came into her home on Kinsey Lane just before 4 a.m. Lonnie Reid says he's lived on the street for about 40 years. He says it's typically a quiet street and there hasn't been a lot of crime.
Car overturns into ditch on Route 58 in Suffolk
Suffolk Police and Suffolk Fire & Rescue responded this morning to a single vehicle accident with an entrapment in the 2600 block of Holland Road/Route 58 near King's Mobile Home Park. Police received the call at 12:37 a.m. advising that the Nissan Sentra was traveling eastbound and crossed over to the westbound lane where it then ran off the road before it overturned and came to rest in a ditch against a tree.
