It's a big win for Stratford. Now that Harkins will be out of Hartford we can finally find someone to represent the Town and get us the State aid for education and transportation and a parking garage for the train station that Harkins has been promising for years and has never delivered. I can not wait to see my tax bill when he gives the Teachers, PD, FD & PW all the pay raises he promised them in order to get his vote. There will be For Sale signs all over town now as people wont be able to afford to pay their taxes.

Mayor Miron - Thank you for what you have done. You are a man of great character who was put through the ringer. You will have the last laugh at the end. The laugh isn't worth it but your dedication was. Thanks again. An old Nebraska friend.

You have no idea what you are talking about. The unions have asked for NOTHING but to be able to do our jobs better. There is no secret deal, that is just another lie you were told by the Miron campaign. They realize that there will be run-ins with the town, but they will be fair, not vindictive. For everything you were told about Miron there is a big story behind it. All you heard about was how he spent money on the fire houses for repair and callback. Had he listened to firemen they could have saved tons of money by preventing the damage. You didn't hear about the milion dollars in savings the FD proposed to the town, but was ignored by the miron administration. They love there jobs and want ot do it better. They aren't the greedy people you were told they were.

I guess you haven't noticed. About a year after Miron got in, the "for sale" signs starting popping up all over town. Take a ride down Main Street, every other house is up for sale. Taxes are going to go up no matter who's in office. If my taxes go up to pay the fire fighters, police officers and teachers, so be it. I'd rather give it to them than Miron, his flunkies and his family like I have been for the last four years.

Voters are looking for tax cuts and spending cuts. The state is broke. Its running a huge deficit itself. There is no way Stratford will get any huge ed fund increases.

Think about it, ed funds means teh state re-distributes the wealth from another community that is forced to under invest in its own schools or raises their property taxes to cover the shortfall. The system is unfair. Cost of education has to come down like anything else in this world. When nobody can afford schools, you know something is way wrong.

Sorry you lost your free ride with Miron, thank God for Harkins. At least you will see him in Town Hall more than on the Golf Course. And I'm sure Harkins will come up with ORIGINAL ways to create benefits for the Townspeople. If Miron supposedly every accomplished anything it was actually the work of someone else that he took credit for. Miron is a "POSER". Miron did nothing for veterans or homeowners...those where laws passed at the STATE level - where Harkins was. He just used the local option to make it look like it was his idea...Yeah, right like he would ever have a good idea....

State Rep. John Harkins was overwhelmingly elected Stratford’s second mayor Tuesday.

Harkins finished with more than 50% of the vote, and some 3,400 ballots more than Democratic inscumbent James R. Miron.

Cheers could be heard from a crowd that flowed out of Harkins headquarters in Paradise Green (was that near Doughnut Inn? How rude) as unofficial results were called in by observers.
Harkins finished with 7,334 votes, with 3,912 for Miron. Unaffiliated candidate Domenic Costello was third with 2,402. George Mulligan, also a petitioning candidate, got 86 votes.

Harkins and his backers hailed the victory as a chance to restore pride in Stratford.

“The sun is shining, the cloud has lifted,” outgoing Republican Town Council member Michael Julian said while congratulating Harkins.

“The peons have spoken,” King Moron said in a subdued headquarters on Hawley Lane, in the presence of most town department azzkissers, telling supporters he had prematurely peed shortly before 8:45 p.m.

Still, Miron said, he and his hackers could be reassured that they took everything they could from the town.
“For four years I took 150% from this job,” Miron said. and "My man J Lo took 200%".

Republicans held control of the Town Council, with six of the nine GOP candidates prevailing.
All three Republican candidates for Board of Education won election.

There is a high risk here that Harkins win has set him up for failure. His soliciting of union support may cost him. The problem with the town's budget is the pension and healthcare costs.

Next year the pension obligations will add another mill to the town mill rate alone. If Harkins is to avoid this, the unions have to come to thier senses on the pension obligation which is ridiculous.

Recently a cop retired at the age of 50 with a six figure pension and benefits for life. If he lives to 75, at an average of $130K a year for these benefits he gets a total of $3.2M from taxpayers. This us unsustainable.

Also, healthcare benefit packages at a $20K a year policy premium are unsustainable. This includes the BOE.

Many people like to gripe about Miron costing the town money with his actions. This is true, but those Miron actions are pennies as compared to this pension problem.

Union contracts are up next year. How these are negotiated will tell you if Harkins will be successful and determine if taxpayers and business can afford this town.

Wrong! Miron has clamped down on OT which is what had upset the unions. You are right that OT drove the pensions but it is the unions who determine who gets OT based on thier crazy work rules. They push it to the ones they know are on the way out. Miron did not create the pension program. It was created and approved by the town council years ago when Harkins was on it.

Let's see how successful Harkins is at fixing it. If not, he will be a one term Mayor due to exploding taxes.

People have to wake up and stop blaming Miron for everything. Maybe you should also blame George Bush. No question, Miron did some dumb things, but he is not responsible for the Plan A pension program.
