Full story: www.connpost.com

Friends and co-workers of Alex Convertito, the 22-year-old Stratford man who suffered severe spinal injuries when his car was struck by an apparent drunken driver Sept. 6, have set up a bank account where money from fund-raising events, as well as any contributions, will be deposited. A weekend sale of baked goods at the Super Stop & Shop in Shelton, where Convertito worked, raised $3,267, said Jaclyn Heilweil, a co-worker and former classmate of Convertito ...

I donated $5, was not even sure what it was for, but knew the folks running it and figured it was for a good cause. Thanks for looking out for another human being!

It just angers me to no end that one person's carelessness will cause such strife in another persons life. I don't mind partying but I never get behind the wheel after drinking, this is the reason why.

Get well Alex!

I do feel bad for this guy however he could have mitigated his injuries simply by buckling up. The seatbelt would have kept him in the car.

if ya cant say something nice dont say it at all. however u feel about seatbelts fine it still doesnt excuse the fact someone got in the car drunk and has a record of it. Alex is a great person and caught a raw deal. Im really proud that everyone has come together for him except the obvious...
get well Alex you have people with you

i too agree with seat belts... but seat belts dont always save lives.. had he worn his seat belt he would have rolled with the car and been killed.. so i am thankful that he made a "dumb" decision that night by no seat belt bc that saved his life. the last roll that car took was into trees.. and we all kno sometimes when its a car vs the tree... tree wins

Your speculation that his decision to not wear a seat belt saved his life is unsubstatiated and dangerous. In almost 50 years of driving I have only seen one situation where wearing a seat belt was shown to have caused someone's death. And he was in a convertible back before they were required to have rollover bars. In the VAST majority of the cases wearing a seat belt and staying in a car, even one that rolss multiple times, is safer than being thrown out.

In one personal case my grandfather turned left in front of a speeding vehicle that slammed into the door next to my grandmother. The state patrol said that if she had been wearing a set belt the strength of the (1956 Pontiac) car door would have protected her, even at the speed that she was hit. However, she was not wearing a seat belt when the door popped open she fell on the pavement and broke her neck! Thank god she did survive but she was in the hospital in traction for months. That accident finally convinced my mother to wear seat belts.

State police on the scene said he would not have survived the accident based on the total damage to the car.

I hope this young man recovers as well as possible. Maybe Stop & Shop can help out financially- he is one of their employee family. Maybe an "Alex Fund" in addition to a "Jimmy Fund'?

All my prayers go out to Alex and his family!

I went to one of the Peoples Bank in Trumbull to make a donation , but they had no idea what I was talking about. Does anyone know if there are only certain banks taking contributions?

I had a business partner that retired form CT State police prior....While in patrol on weekend evening he was hit head on by a driver under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Driver was driving on wrong side of Major highway about 85 MPH...My partner WAS wearing a seat belt and was trapped by his seat belt with the dui driver's head through his cruiser windshield..he could not disengage the seat belt.
He refused after that nighmare to ever wear one. He also on call to plenty of many trapped by seat belts car on fire....
Bottom line is DUI is DUI screw the seat belt theory...Tell it like it is a person under the influence of anything should not get behind the wheel. Whomever is writing the damn seatbelt propaganda to diminish the responsibility of someone would should not been on the road. You must be a friend or family member of that person that had no business behind the wheel. End the seat belt bull already and let us all try to help Alex and his family with prayers, contributions and some positive comments PLEASE!

It is not speculation in Alex's case. Police reported the car was so mangled. From their professional experience cars that sustained that type of hit damage rarely bore survivors. So by a fluke, wore belt had been in the vehicle he more than likely "would not have survived" God Bless Alex and his family and friends
