Alexander County Proposes New Land-Use Plan: Balancing bucolic with business
“They're interested in growth. They understand growth is needed”
Alexander County is beautiful with its rolling hills and quiet countryside, and people here want to keep it that way. But they also want to see it bring in jobs and tax revenue.
A county-appointed committee has taken that vision and incorporated it into a new version of Alexander's land-use plan, the document's first update since county commissioners adopted the inaugural version in 1993.
The proposal, which commissioners could adopt in April, would guide the board and planners as they control the county's growth over the next 10-15 years. Read more

“I'm pretty sure I'll get that (record).”
For years, Brian 'Buck' Stikeleather has caught whopper-sized white crappie at Lake Norman, with most of the fish ending up on his dinner plate.
After seeing that a white crappie record actually exists in North Carolina, Stikeleather finally put one in the record book.
In early December, Stikeleather of Stony Point landed a 1-pound, 13-ounce white crappie near the Long Island area at the northern end of Lake Norman. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, which keeps track of fishing records, officially declared it a state record last week. Read more
