Welcome to the world that all the private business owners, contractors, employees, pensioners, tax payers and other non-government workers face every single week. Why shouldn't laying off state or other "government" workers not be on the table? It is necessary and required. Barajas! State workers do not have a target on their backs. They are also not sacred cows. The entire economy has receded which requires "government" employees to be let go of as they have been everywhere else. This is just plain economics. Your call to raise revenues simply means slashing services, raising taxes and giving it to the state workers while the rest of us suffer the consequence.

That would be a tough choice. The cost of living is probably twice as high in Albuquerque as Springer, and I doubt the state can afford pay increases to make up the difference. But the workers aren't likely to find much else to do in Springer...

So, the juveniles have all been moved to Albuquerque and the 25 employees did not have a clue that their jobs were superfluous? What have they been doing for the last months? 25 people supervising 5 juveniles? As someone else commented, government should take some lessons from private enterprise.

Two quotes from the article: "It took us by surprise. We haven't had time to let it really sink in," said Sam Blea, a youth-care specialist who was among those told that Nov. 30 is their last day". "Blea, who serves as president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 1375, said the facility's five remaining juveniles were moved Monday to sites in Albuquerque". Let's see now, the last five remaining juveniles were moved out of the facility yet THEY WERE TAKEN BY SURPRISE that something was taking place? H-m-m-m m, what was their first clue, lol! Who are they going to counsel, guard and protect until November 30th? Just curious! Maybe they need some additional clues as to what is going on.

Please don't confuse Governor Ex's with regular joe State workers. While I agree with "Santa Fe private employed" that State workers are not immune from what has been happening all around us, "Get Rid" seems to suggest that regular joe State workers ought to pay the price for the Governor's growth of exempt employees. I can almost guarantee that none of these people being laid or moved are Bill's friends (in fact, he's probably found a way to embed his friends in permanent non-exempt positions in Springer by moving regular joes worker's out of the way). But I guess that is the way of the private world: regular workers pay for management's shortsightedness with their jobs, while the management team largely stays in place and is often rewarded for cutting costs (i.e. American jobs).

regardless of the inmate moves, the gomer pyles of the state should extend professional courtesy to all employee regardless of voting blocks, and advise them of the changes that affect their family future. Lucky varela is snob ed along with others, the administration act as their leader, they have the power and the h$ll with anyone else including the house and senate. Bills reprieve has no created a more arrogant, narcissistic, leader, same that denish thinks shes elected and has no need to at least speak out. yes the exempt and double dippers should be first to go, remember that Lucky Varela sponsored a double dipper legislative bill, passed by both house and senate and vetoed by Daddy Bill. All we read are the same candidates or one elected office after another, the only office that offers a variety of new comers is the Lt. Gov., the voter apathy is new mexico is a national same and history will treat this period as the worst.

One thing I find puzzling, why the CYFD couldn't find enough delinquent criminals to fill the facility? Hell, half of the kids in Santa Fe (probably Springer too) are drop-out thugs who should be taken off the streets. At least the workers have the chance to relocate if they wish. How many laid off Americans were given an opportunity like that?

Amazing they kept the facility open for 5 teen thugs. As for the rest, NM history (colonialism, patrons, and slaves) is still with us. The entrenched servant mentality is present at all levels. The Big Man takes the money and y'all say 'yes massa' and follow along. Beat your wife and shoot a gun to convince yourself you are really in control. Honestly, it's pathetic. Can't use the N word but maybe we can call it H-iggers - there ain't much difference.

The last 2 layoffs I've been in, I haven't had a guaranteed job if only I would move, heck, I'd have loved to have that kind of choice. These particular state employees need to get a damn clue and just move. You can live just fine in Albuquerque, and I'd be willing to wager these guys make more than most in NM.

First, I agree...the Gov-ex's and double dippers should be the FIRST to go. Get rid of the deadwood! That should amount to at least 1/3 of the entire state employee payroll... Second, it would have been helpful and relevant to this story to know how FAR Springer is from ABQ,and why the move is such a big deal for the remaining employees. Why should I have to look it up on Mapquest? Hello?!

Where do you get off commenting on anything when you're that stupid and clueless?

Those who are double dipping should be let go. There is no need for them anymore. If they retired then that means someone should have moved in to take their position. Yes we are all feeling the pain in this economy but lets not forget that these are people like me and you that may loosing their job and maybe hundreds more if something is not done. Lets not forget that we are in this hole because we as a people have transformed to mindless uncompassionate individuals who only look out for ourselves. We have allowed our government to become a puppet of big industry which in turn has turned the people into bugs on the wall that without notice are smashed. Wake up people the trap door is closing time to make a run for it or at least put up a fight.

Journal writers can't think about all the details that some outsider might not know about our state. It would take 2 full pages to make people like you not have to use a map. Gees. Sorry you were so inconvenienced that you had to use a map.

Here it goes again....tax and spend. I don't mind if my taxes increase slightly, if I know the money is being managed properly. This country has a big problem in trying to manage their money. Don't raise my taxes if you can't manage a budget! I'm a voter and I am counting down the days for the next election!
