Chased-down robber sentenced

In December, 21-year-old Peter Allen Jackson, of Sand Mountain Road in Spring Mills, held up Vernon 'Pickle' Jodon at Jodon's Country Place only to have the 60-year-old store owner chase him down, first by vehicle and then on foot.

On Monday, the man who was hauled back to stunned state police in the back of Jodon's pickup truck in December was sentenced by Centre County Judge Bradley P. Lunsford to serve four and a half to nine years in state prison for a guilty plea to armed robbery. Read more

Local stores' policies vary on coupon use

“At stores in PA with the same coupon policy (doubling to a max of $1), the number of coupons redeemed is about twice what we see at State College, ”

For retailers, coupons help draw shoppers into the store and keep them coming back. For consumers, it's a way to stretch a budget, and a number of Centre County shoppers take advantage of discounts available to them.

'The coupons that are still available are used heavily,' said Jesse Burkholder, owner of Burkholder's Country Market near Millheim.

He said more manufacturers are providing discounts electronically for stores that utilize shopper discount cards, and cutting back on printed coupons. Read more

Red Cross calls for local blood donors

Snow, sleet and freezing rain prompted the cancellation of 19 blood drives in February, which has left American Red Cross blood collections in the Greater Alleghenies Region running almost 10 percent below projections.

Red Cross officials on Monday issued a plea for blood donors to come out to one of the remaining drives scheduled this month.

In addition to canceled blood drives, the winter weather has kept donor turnout low, said Jim Starr, CEO of the Greater Alleghenies Region, in a news release. Read more
