The town's volunteer fire department was kept busy over the weekend as it battled two brush fires within hours of each other, Sunday.

Thomas Mackey, 22, of Nashua and formerly of Spofford and Swanzey, will spend the next four months in jail after he pleaded guilty Wednesday in Cheshire County Superior Court to one misdemeanor and one felony count of animal cruelty for abusing and killing his cat.

Police say 49-year-old Scott W. Samson of Spofford, N.H., was driving a 2011 Porsche Carrera Turbo when he was stopped for speeding Thursday morning.

This week, zoning officials approved one of the first applications for the Broad Street Parkway construction, giving crews the green light to work within wetlands to build the new bridge crossing.

Fire Chief Gordon Rudolph said heavy rain helped subdue a two-alarm fire that destroyed a Jeep and a wood barn on High Street Thursday morning.
