East Hampton Town Board Plans For Aircraft Regulations

If all goes according to plan, the East Hampton Town Board intends to have some aircraft regulations in place at the East Hampton Airport before the beginning of the 2015 summer season, Councilwoman Kathee Burke-Gonzalez announced at a board meeting on Tuesday morning.

Southampton man drops civil rights suit against Suffolk DA Spota

A Southampton man whose 2011 drug conviction was overturned amid a probe of the Southampton Town Police Department has dropped his lawsuit against Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota. Kwame Opoku's attorney wrote a letter to U.S. District Court Judge Joseph Bianco on Thursday saying he didn't want to pursue the case.

Residents who want Southampton and Tuckahoe schools to merge made emotional appeals for the districts to unite during a meeting of about 75 residents last week. Southampton school board members said they organized the forum after sensing disinterest in the merger attempt -- the districts' second in two years -- among Southampton residents this summer.

Crabbing Ban Extended for Georgica Pond

Unless future testing of East Hampton's Georgica Pond has better results, taking crabs and other marine life will be prohibited there for at least another three weeks, the East Hampton Town Trustees decided on Tuesday. Most recent water samples indicate a "dangerously high level" of cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, which was first detected in the pond in July, said Stephanie Forsberg, the trustees' assistant clerk.

Anti-Noise Crescendo

In the wake of an East Hampton Town Board forum on aircraft noise that drew almost 400 people to LTV Studios on Aug. 27, the East Hampton Village Board unanimously voted in favor of a resolution last Thursday urging the town board to adopt a comprehensive aircraft noise-limitation policy that would include evening and weekend curfews. On Tuesday the Sag Harbor Village Board did the same.

Hearing on Subdivision After Six Years

Maintaining this view from Wainscott Hollow Road toward Sayre's Path has been a key concern of the East Hampton Town Planning Board as it reviews a subdivision application for 40 acres of former farmland there. Conciliation was in the air, and olive branches were extended in all directions on Aug. 27, when the East Hampton Town Planning Board scheduled a public hearing on the subdivision of roughly 40 acres of Wainscott farmland, which will result in seven house lots.

Cyanobacteria Bloom Occuring in Sagg Pond, Old Town Pond

State and local government officials have confirmed the presence of a cyanobacteria bloom in Sagg Pond in Sagaponack and Old Town Pond in Southampton. Health officials ask residents not to use, swim or wade in these waters and to keep pets and children away from the area due to the high levels of toxic cyanobacteria or blue-green algae.

Suffolk County SPCA Praises Southampton Town Police Officer

September 8, 2014 - The Suffolk County SPCA issued a statement today praising Southampton town Police Officer Metcalf for his heroic work in rescuing a turtle in Hampton Bays. Roy Gross, Chief of the Suffolk County SPCA said that the snapping turtle was crossing Montauk Highway near Munn's Pond County Park at about 4pm yesterday when Officer Metcalf noticed it and positioned his patrol car so the turtle wouldn't get run over.

Police: Southampton Woman Struck by Object While on a Boat

Southampton Town Police, Southampton Town Bay Constables and Southampton Volunteer Ambulance responded to Southampton Town Dock at Towd Point Road in North Sea in order to assist a person who sustained injuries while aboard a boat in Little Peconic Bay in the Town of Southampton on Sunday at about 7 p.m., according to police. The arriving officers found a 69-year-old Southampton female who sustained severe face injuries and trauma to her mouth after the boat she had been a passenger in struck an object in the bay.
