In Monday's annual town election, challenger Scott LeBeau beat incumbent selectman Stu Mahjoory in a close race for that seat.

The Advisory and Finance Committee voted last week that it will recommend at the annual town meeting on May 20 to cut the budgets of the regional high school district and kindergarten through grade eight school district by two percent.

Article 31 of the annual Town Meeting will request that voters approve an allocation of $200,000 for the purchase of eight parcels of land currently owned by NRG, the company that had the former Montaup power plant.

By a 7-3 vote, the majority of the Advisory and Finance Board supported an article that requests $1,528,000 for a garage for the Highway Department.

Somerset School Committee member Victor Machado has asked for an item to be put on the next meeting agenda for the committee to discuss sending a statement of interest to the Massachusetts School Building Authority to see if the state agency would provide funding to the town to build an addition that would allow for the merger of the Wilbur School ... Of the six candidates running in the Somerset Annual Town Election, selectman's candidate Scott LeBeau had raised the most money as of the deadline to submit campaign finance reports eight days before the election.
